B11 DENVER CATHOLIC | OCTOBER 22-NOVEMBER 11, 2016 We extend our warmest congratulations to Auxiliary Bishop Jorge Rodriguez. From the Jesuit Works of Colorado CONGRATULATIONS, BISHOP-ELECT JORGE RODRIGUEZ Divine Mercy Supportive Care, our local Catholic Hospice, thanks you for your continued support, particularly with our newly-formed O ce of Hispanic Liaison. is o ce will reach deeply into the Catholic Hispanic community in an e ort to bring education to the value of hospice care for those with advanced illness. We would also like to thank you for being there to administer the Anointing of the Sick to our very rst patient when you were a newly appointed pastor at Holy Cross Catholic Church in 2014. You will always hold a very special place in our agency's heart. Intensive caring PEAKS The upper portion of the shield, also called the "chief," is separated by three peaks, the center one higher than the others. This suggests the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, an iconic symbol of the region in which Bishop-elect Rodriguez will serve. GALERO/TASSELS The broad-brimmed hat above the cross is known as a galero. This hat was originally worn by the cardi- nals of the Church when riding on horseback to shield them from the sun, but has since been adapted in heraldry as a more fi tting armo- rial symbol for the Church. The twelve tassels coming from the galero indicate Bishop-elect Rodri- guez's rank within the church as a successor of the twelve Apostles, and the green is borrowed from a former time when bishops wore green, as opposed to the purple they traditionally wear today. MOTTO Below the shield lies a scroll with Bishop-elect Rodri- guez's motto in Latin.
