Sunday, September 18th with
a break between each of the
two-lap sessions. By the time
the race started, it was clear that
most of the top points leaders
who competed were playing
it safe, trying to stay ahead of
their competition and earn as
many points as possible going
into the "1000" in November.
LOPEZ COMES IN HOT
Apdaly Lopez in the number-
one RPM Off Road Chevrolet
Trophy Truck was determined
to win in Rosarito Beach at any
cost -- and ultimately paid the
price. While Lopez finished with
the fastest times, he received a
15-minute penalty for course
violations, which ended up
putting him in sixth place. "We
were going faster than we were
planning so the brake-point
wasn't right, and we stopped
about 25-feet after the finish line,"
said Apdaly Lopez. "The brakes
were a little hot but they were
good, so it was a mental error."
After Lopez's penalties, it was
his father Juan C.Lopez who
had the fastest elapsed times
that left him in first place to
win the race. "We've been able
to spend so much time racing
together and this race just adds
to Apdaly's experience," said
Lopez, who demonstrated how
a fast pace and patience led
to a winning combination.
"It was a very demanding
race because of the difficulty
of the course," said Apdaly
Lopez. We knew we had a lead
over Billy Wilson of about four
minutes so we tried not to push
anything. Our goal was to try
and finish as high as we could
to gain momentum going into
the SCORE Baja 1000. It was
