HEAD AND NECK RESTRAINTS ARE ANCHORED DIRECTLY TO THE HELMET. ALL APPROVED HELMETS CAN BE RETRO-FITTED FOR THE ANCHORS. head and neck restraints. Some argue, these devices don't allow a racer to look behind them at critical times, or they make it difficult to get out of the vehicle fast enough to change a flat tire, or during an emergency. Yet a large percent of the comments you see on forums are in favor of head and neck restraints being mandatory for all drivers across all the major off-road sanctioning bodies. As unscientific as these opinions might appear, it does suggest that people want to be protected and that cost is not the issue (head and neck restraints sell between $350 to $1,500). The bigger issue is whether or not the sanctioning bodies will make head and neck restraints mandatory. SCORE International currently has no rule that addresses it. But that might change. TYPES OF RESTRAINTS There are many different brands and styles of head and neck restraints on the market for ATVs, UTVs, motorcycles, trucks and cars. These include restraints that are SFI or FIA certified offered by Necksgen, Leatt, Simpson, Z-Neck Tech, Schroth and Impact Race Products. However, the most popular and the original is the HANSĀ© device, which always carries its trademarked logo. Depending on the type of head and neck restraint you consider what they all have in common is they tether the helmet to the seat and/or seat harnesses. They look very similar, but there are differences between the brands, but essentially they all perform the same function, which is to help prevent injuries from frontal collisions.
