The Dutch disco don just keeps staying ahead Palmbomen is the moniker of Dutch producer Kai Hugo, meaning palm trees in Dutch. It's a name which fits his best beats – continental, analogue exotica - as well as his relocation to Los Angeles. His name really came to light due to his second release, Palmbomen II. The release is woozy house and disco with reverb and noise enough to make it happy background music, and with tunes enough to make it DJ fodder. Released on Tim Sweeney's Beats in Space, it's tracks are named after X Files characters, which completes the nostalgic vibe of the release, which hisses and fuzzes like a 90s mixtape. The ultimate Palmbomen gem, however, comes from the A side of his first album, 2013's Night Flight Europa. PARA In 2016 the producer is playing worldwide, including a set at industry festival favourite Amsterdam Dance Event, and releasing music on the Dutch label Pinkman. The EP, a collaboration with compatriot Betonkust is called 'Hotel Breukelen' and was out last month. It's a concept album around the leisure industry and the creepy video for 'Landsbelang' features an animated girl in a bikini dancing over the top of grainy footage. A house album with a hip hop twist and a heart of gold Beats from Detroit in a warehouse in London ONE TO WATCH: YOUANDEWAN At the end of November, on Saturday 26, the Hydra gets together with Dimensions Festival to celebrate the existence of Dimensions for a grand total of five years. The two electronic music giants bring together generational greats to form a banging lineup – Moodymann heads up the house extravaganza alongside Omar S, whilst the Dimensions Soundystem backs them up in the Warehouse room. Moodymann and Omar S are both pioneers of Detroit house and techno. Room 2 of the Hydra's venue Studio Spaces celebrates 15 years with Danish record label Echocord in the Black Studio. YouandEwan is a house act currently signed to Aus Music that has just released its debut album – There is no Right Time. The album is full of surprising and refreshing tracks that no one expects from a big house record – hip hop and ambient all feature. YouandEwan, a Scot who relocated to Berlin, has created a record that reflects his experience as an expat; it's full of uncertainty and emotion. 4D Anxiety is an album highlight – mellow, electronic hip hop with a video of a glitch 3D model man walking into a psychedelic digital sunset.
