50 ISSUE 93 / 2016 INDIE Kent quartet Native People show off their evolved sound in new single 'Figure It Out'. Produced by The Citrus Clouds and Oz Craggs, the new track retains the band's core essence whilst showcasing their versatility as they explore a new direction for their sound - a mix of downtempo funk and contemporary pop. 'Figure It Out' perfectly reflects the change in tone and lifestyle between summer and autumn/winter. Laid back beats and melancholic lyrics replace those driving drums and discordant vocals. Reuben Todd's airy vocals complement the ethereal pads and delicate percussion, coming together to convey the desire to 'figure it out'. 2016 has been a big year for Native People, with their summer single 'Call Me' breaking into the top 10 on Spotify's UK Viral Chart and being labeled "the sound of summer" by BBC Introducing. As well as a tour of Germany and Holland, the band headlined Club NME at KOKO, and are heading out on their first UK headline tour this month. NEWS: NATIVE PEOPLE ARE HERE TO 'FIGURE IT OUT' ALBUM OF THE MONTH: HONEYBLOOD - BABES NEVER DIE Honeyblood smash their second effort, Babes Never Die The best indie album I've listened to this month comes from Glaswegian indie- pop trio Honeyblood. Called Babes Never Die, it's a great progression from their eponymous 2014 debut, taking the band from bitterness, albeit very listenable bitterness, through to strength and empowerment. Their debut was full of youthful ire in the most genuine and vulnerable way, keeping it emotionally powerful despite its wrathful lyricism. Babes Never Die has the same spirit, with a more knowing, confident edge, both lyrically and musically. 'Sea Hearts', one of the LP's lead singles, is powerpop grunge with a Hayley Williams snarl. The hell hath no fury theme continues from the first album here - 'we'll break hearts that get in our way'. Perhaps even more impressive is 'Ready for the Magic', which rocks a video of Honeyblood being burnt at the stake by a tribe of feral little girls. More at Guestlist.net TRACK OF THE MONTH: RADIO-FRIENDLY, NORTHERN SOUL IS OUR INDIE TRACK OF THE WEEK Radio-friendly, northern soul is our indie track of the week Smoove and Turrell have got their northern soul perfected – 'Fight On', one of the tracks from the band's upcoming album, is disco-inflected, working class soul with a bit of grit. The social realism of the lyrics is a healthy dose of humanity when considered in combination with the radio-friendly pop of the record's disco sound. It would be a necessary addition to a pop-oriented soul, funk, disco or indie set. Smoove and Turrell's new album, Crown Posada, is released on October 14 on Jalapeno Records.
