We run through parks, we run for the bus and we run anyway from mental people at 3am on a Saturday night. But mostly, Londoners run to keep fit without having to endure the horror that is the gym. You can get from Westminster to Camden in less time than the average tube journey, and probably without sweating as much. Dodging hordes of tourists becomes quite fun. You probably won't want to try Brick Lane on a Sunday, but nevertheless, tourists become little hurdles put there to help your foot-work and increase your calories burnt per hour. Barefoot running is the latest craze to hit the UK and is pretty much self-explanatory. You run, in barefoot. There are virtues to barefoot running, apparently, and it has been said to help your form as well as reducing your chances of future injury by strengthening your feet and teaching you to run lighter and more consciously. Other people have said it's mad. Understandably, those who live in the countryside with rolling plush fields and nothing worse than the odd cowpat to stand on will be more likely to join the trend. In the city however, it's a bit different. And unless you want all man- ner of sharp objects and infectious diseases embedded into the soles of your feet, barefoot running is probably a no- go. Now on the market however, the half-way mark between bare skin and trainers, are foot gloves. Somewhere between toe-socks and shoes, this new innova- tion gives you all the benefits of bare feet with none of the pain. And whilst they're slightly on the weird side of sports fashion, that's the price you'll have to pay for getting back to nature.
