22 FILMwww.guestlist.net Issue 41 / 2012 THE AMAZING SPIDERMAN 6th July Spiderman is back and the pressure has been well and truly on for young director Marc Webb. Upon watching The Amazing Spiderman, one can't help but feel that Christopher Nolan has been robbed of a production credit. After all, it was his own Batman Begins that proved the modern superhero movie could be dark, meditative and still smash the box office. It also kicked-off Hollywood's reliance filmmakers to create their blockbusters. Joss Whedon landing The Avengers was a nerds dream come true and the film somehow lived up to it's hefty potential. Suddenly the Brett Ratner's and Roland Emmerich's of the world can't get a look in – it's all about credibility. Cue 500 Days of Summer director Marc Webb on more leftfield at the helm of this reboot. With literally one feature- length film to his name – albeit a very good one – the people at Marvel clearly have a lot of faith in the young director. And their faith is rewarded with a smart, snappy crowd- pleaser that feels at once fresh and yet joyously familiar. The more was inevitable, and Webb has made enough changes to keep things novel from the very beginning – including not only our hero's more confident demeanour, of Sam Raimi's 2002 film are recreated, and there will be a sense of déjà vu for many as Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker (interpreted here as an iconic moments skater-boy, Tobey Maguire's handsomely awkward nerd) gets bitten by a funky spider and gains some new powers. But this awkwardly in contrast handsome to swapping of mainstay love interest Mary Jane for Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone), who makes for a warm and kooky partner-in-crime. but also the handles the action sequences quite well, as Spidey squares off against Rhys Ifans reptilian mad-scientist The Lizard, but his real strength lies creating a sweet, believable relationship between Gwen and Peter. The film hinges on their chemistry, and both Garfield and Stone turn in great performances. Webb BRAVE August 17th Pixar's latest masterpiece about a young princess who upsets the natural order of her kingdom features an array of British vocal talent, including Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connelly and Julie Walters. THE BOURNE LEGACY August 17th There's no Matt Damon this time round, but a classy cast including series regular Joan Allen, Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz and Jer- emy Renner as our new hero give weight to what could so easily be a weak cash-in. TED August 3rd This hotly anticipated comedy marks Family Guy creator Seth Macfarlane's first foray into live action cinema. Mark Wahlberg flexes his comedy muscles as a rather helpless schlub with a crude teddy bear for a best friend. COMING SOON...
