42 DRUM N BASS / DUBSTEP ARTIST OF THE MONTH www.guestlist.net JUBEI DRUM & BASS REVIEW SPECTRASOUL DELAY NO MORE Issue 41 / 2012 The popularity of dubstep in recent years has given way to numerous mutations of the sound. The man behind the massive 'Say Nothing' single featuring Flowdan, is swiftly establish- ing himself as one of the pin- nacle artists in drum & bass. A name that's been hot in the drum & bass scene since 2009, Jubei is steadily es- tablishing himself as one of the top producers of drum & bass around. He's had re- leases on several major labels such as Critical, Metalheadz and Exit Records. Known for his dark, techy style of drum & bass and minimal future jungle and having worked with the likes of Breakage, SPY, Lenzman and many more, his tracks are sure to feature in the set of any DJ in the know. He's also teamed up with long-time friends Dakuan and SP:MC to form the collective known as Code 3, releasing heavy bangers like 'Living Proof'. This year signals the release of his de- but album, which we at The Guestlist Network are pretty excited about. The first single off the album is a collabora- tion with Roll Deep's Flow- dan, called 'Say Nothin', a sinister warning to snitches, with a suitably eerie beat to accompany. Check the video for this certified tune, out now. After six years in the scene without an album, the Brighton based duo's release is aptly named but even more importantly, well worth the wait. The pair is known for their unique blend of soulful, liquid drum & bass and more up- beat, dance floor friendly rollers. Not want- ing to disappoint but also keen to display their innovative vision, they've created an amalgamation of new and old, keeping the chilled, soulful and often moody elements of their previous style but often fusing it with genres outside the realms of drum & bass. A prime example of this is 'Away With Me' a dark yet bouncy piece of 2-step featuring the seductive vocals of Tamara Blessa. The range of genres they've ex- perimented with has also allowed them to create an album that flows and is cohesive in its mood and tonality whilst maintaining enough variance to keep listeners hooked from start to finish. This also makes it hard to mention standout tracks, because each track is unique and stands out in its own right, there's simply not a weak song on the album. However I will recommend those who are new to Spectrasoul to start out with 'Away With Me', 'Light in the Dark', 'Shackles' and 'Sometimes We Lie...' as these are the tracks which are most instan- taneously gratifying; some of the others are creepers which require deeper levels of at- tention to be appreciated fully.
