Issue 41 / 2012 DISMANTLE DRUM N BASS / DUBSTEP 43 www.guestlist.net 7 At just 19 years old, he has just released his first EP on Shy Fx's infamous label Digital Soundboy. Watch out because this Brighton born DJ and producer is definitely one to watch this year. JOHNO| johno@guestlist.net Dismantle just dropped a massive 3-song release on Wheel & Deal. Currently most known for his 2011 single 'Computation', a song that has come to solidify itself as an instant floor-filling classic, Dismantle is back to show fans that his brand of music is here to stay. The 19 year old teen from Brighton, otherwise known as Will Knighton, has already had his previous tracks supported highly by the likes of Skream, Benga, Shy Fx, Kutz and Annie Mac and that's only a few of the big names showing much love for Dismantle. He may be young, but if the rate that Dismantle keeps bringing out massive tunes keeps up, it will only be a matter of time before he becomes a household name. We recently caught up with him for a brief chat in order to get to know the bloke behind the beats: For those who don't know, how would you describe your sound? People call it dubstep, people call it house, people call it electro, but I don't know what it is, just making what I like to make. Predominantly it's a load of 4/4 kick drums which follows the house thing, then sometimes the half time snare which follows the dubstep sort of thing, so I don't know, just influences I've had I just put into what I make. What Artists are some of your biggest influences? started You recently put out a 3 song EP on Wheel & Deal, can you tell us something about that, you had the massive Computation VIP mix obviously but yeah can you tell us a little something more about that release? Yeah computation is probably the that's coming out? Warp EP is my debut EP on Digital Soundboy, which I'm now signed to. It's got four tracks on it: Warp, More Funk, The Witch and Dots. It was a long time coming for all of them too because basically I was playing them in mixes a long time ago but they signed them up. Warp was actually a really old track but it People call it dubstep, people call it house, people call it electro, but I don't know what it is, just making what I like to make. Zinc and Redlight have got to be one of them, a lot of house guys, too many to mention, a lot of people, but off the top of my head right now, Zinc and Redlight are definitely the ones who influenced me to do this sort of stuff because they came out with something new and I followed that a lot and what they were making and putting out was exactly what I wanted to do. I wanted to make something like them but then put it to 140 bpm and that's how the whole thing biggest tune that I've had out, that's gotten me where I am today, the VIP came out about 2 weeks ago, around June the 4th. It was a long time coming. I Initially said it wasn't coming out but I spoke with N-Type the label manager and he agreed for it to come out on the AA side for 'Destroy'. We also heard about the Warp EP coming out on Digital Soundboy, can you tell us more about that release needed a good home. Digital Soundboy is the right home for it, they wanted a strong EP so I felt all four tracks was the right home for it. What sort of sound can we expect from the four tracks? Just 4/4 party music, basically carnival, electro, whatever people want to call it. It's just party music. 4/4 kicks, really up beat, good party vibes basically. Check them out on Official Dismantle Soundcloud: http://soundcloud.com/dismantlemusic How long have you been producing for? I'm just about to turn 20, started when I was about 14 just going back to my house after school, messing around on Reason making beats. Just started from there. When I first started I didn't think "right I'm going to do this and this to get big" I was literally just going home and messing about on Reason, which I'm still producing on now. Were there any artists around that time as well that got you into producing for yourself? Yeah it was all drum & bass artists. The main producer for me was DJ Hazard, whose the main guy who got me into it. People like Taxman, drum & bass labels like Bassline Smith, loads of people. I was a drum & bass boy, collected all the vinyl back in the day and that's how it started for me.
