TODDLA T Issue 41 / 2012 THE GUESTLIST NETWORK www.guestlist.net 7 7 Starting his new show on BBC Radio 1, this Sheffield lad has been giving us some crazy basslines and ridiculous tunes. About to drop his new album next month, expect this year to be even bigger than the last. John-o Donnachie Johno@guestlist.net You're new version of album "Watch Me Dance" is out the 13th of August can you tell us more about this project? your It's literally a remixed version of my album "Watch Me Dance". The tracks are done buy two people, Ross Orton and DJ Pipes who when I was growing up DJ Pipes was THE DJ and Ross Orton was THE producer, they are massively inspiring to me but not only that, they wanted to take this record and give it a sound that's so close to my heart, the Sheffield sound the original sound that influenced me and it was just an amazing thing to be able to give the parts to two of my biggest inspirations, let them pick my album apart and let them do what they want with it and make a whole new record around my album so I'm excited man, I'm so happy to be able to get away with doing that and also just showing everyone just how talented these two blokes are. Yeah, so as you said you're bringing the Sheffield sound to the world with the help of Ross Orton and DJ Pipes, so how did this collaboration come about? Well they're from Sheffield, I'm from Sheffield, I used to DJ with Pipes regularly and he showed me so many things about Djing, same with Ross Orton, go to the studio with him and he use to show me things that were so small but so effective that I remember spending a day in the studio with him it was more valid then the whole year I'd spent at college. Not only that I just loved their sounds so much. Without those two guys I wouldn't make the music I'm making today, no doubt about it. I'd still be making music but not like the tunes I make now. I collaborated with them in the past. I use to nice and weighty, its quite fun, its quite hard but its just a real fun record and I like the Streets Get Warmer dub they did as well because again it reminds me so much of back home, but I love the whole thing. Correct me if I'm wrong but you also have the single for Alive, is that coming out soon or is that already out at the moment? That's coming out the same day as the album which is August 13th, it's a whole different type of track, the agitated album is a very this is just another step in that whole thing doing this type of record. I love this record, I'm so proud of it, it's got a live quartet, live piano, it took ages to get right, video is really uplifting and it's got Shola Ama who is one of my collaborators and it's cool, it's all coming together on August 13th so it's a fun little month for me that. That's going to be like international August 13th, so as well as all of these musical protects you also present on Radio 1, can Toddla T day, a new rapper from L.A, and then a couple of weeks we've got Redlight on, so again its just all types of new music, all types of music, two hours keeping it fun and bumping, fresh and you can listen to that four Thursday night into Friday morning on BBC Radio 1 GM Time or bbc.co.uk/radio1 for the Iplayer. live from two till places that we can catch you and where are some of the other festivals we can see you at for the rest of summer? Sick, wait did you say you had Nas on the show last week? Man what was he like? The tracks are done buy two people, Ross Orton and DJ Pipes who when I was growing up DJ Pipes was THE DJ and Ross Orton was THE producer, they are massively inspiring to me. We've given it a listen and the whole thing is sick, we've also picked our favourites but can you tell us what some of your favourite tracks from the album are? I really like cherry picking, it just reminds me so much of back home, the record to me sounds so Sheffield, it's brilliant, I play it out in my DJ sets, I also really like the rip off of Lovely Girl, its Sheffield, rugged and raw record whereas the Alive single is a very soft, samba, you could almost call it a pop record. It's up on your website as well and it sounds sick to us and is definitely something different. Yeah it's cool, as I get older and as I do more things in music, I get more space and concepts to go different places in musically and you tell us more about the show and where some of the places people can listen to it? It's a major opportunity again, I broadcast every Thursday night/Friday morning from two till four am, last week we had Nas on the show which to me was an amazing experience, this week I'm doing a reggae bit and a speed garage bit, next week I've got Kendrick Lamar whose He was cool man, he's bringing out his tenth studio album so he was going through his promo for his new record and we spoke about why he'd often incorporated music, we spoke about New York, we talked about his new record, its really cool man, go on the Iplayer and you can have a listen. reggae into his You're on tour right now, so where are some of the other Check out Toddla T @ www.toddlat.com I don't really do tours, I just DJ all the time and I've got a new show called the Toddla T Sound which is the first system take on the DJ set so I'm playing all my own material, a load of dub plates, a load of remixes, I'm bringing out Shola Ama, DRS, there's a massive visual rig to go with it, its like a bunked up version of a DJ gig and its called the Toddla T Sound, you can catch that at Bestival this year and all round Europe and that's the DJing I'm at every weekend, I'm out three nights a week, I'm going everywhere from Swansea to San Francisco. Sick, before we finish, what are some of the links that people can keep up to date with everything Toddla T? Twitter.com/toddlat and facebook.com/toddlat and everything gets put up on them, from what I'm eating for dinner to who I'm eating with.
