50 ISSUE 94 / 2016 INDIE It's been a mammoth 18 years since their last LP The Jesus and Mary Chain have announced the release of their new album Damage & Joy, which is the follow-up to 1998's Munki. The record, out in March 2017, was produced by Youth, who also plays bass on it, alongisde features from the band's touring drummer Brian Young and former Lush bassist Phil King. We've already had a taster in the shape of 'Amputation', which was premiered on BBC 6 Music by Steve Lamacq, and we like it a lot. NEWS: THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN ARE BACK WITH A NEW ALBUM ALBUM OF THE MONTH: SOFT HAIR Soft Hair is a coalition between Late of the Pier's Sam Eastgate and solo artist Con- nah Mockasin. The pair met when Mockasin supported Late of the Pier's ravey indie beats in 2008 with his psych-pop medley of sounds. What they've made together is funkier, bigger and more sophisticated than what they did before. At best, it sounds like Prince as a stoner, which is obviously the sound we've all been missing. Slacker pop combines with classic funk and disco sounds to create this technicoloured wonder of an LP. It works far in the duo's favour that they don't take themselves too seriously – being funny in good music is really underdone. When done right, as here, the result is liberating to listen to and probably create. Like dance music back in the good old days, it's down to earth and human as well as euphoric and floor-filling. 'Lying has to Stop' perfectly demonstrates how the dynamic duo's vocal and musical styles complement each other. A sincere yet light-hearted breakup song, its soft-edged bleeps, playful vocals and lazy, woozy guitar make for an exemplary piece of chilled out dance-pop. Mockasin's falsetto stretches to childlike squeaks and Eastgate sings in a lower voice with no less creativity. Fabulous and fantastical, this Soft Hair has longevity. TRACK OF THE MONTH: HALF CROWN - START IT UP Half Crown release double A-side single 'Start It Up/32 Teeth' The Brighton based five-piece are not afraid to borrow and mix different musical genres to create their upbeat rock/rap hyrbid sound. Both tracks are bonafide sing-along stompers with nods to their varied influences, which include Alex Turner, David Bowie, Bee Gee's and Andre 3000. Continuing their DIY ethos they've put together a video for 'Start It Up', aided by their darker alter-ego band members. Frontman Louie explains: "Once you realise the potential gravity of an opportunity and the journey that's to follow, will you seize or will you freeze? This visual explores a surreal depiction of this 'inner turmoil' right at the precipice" Abendrot You Blew It!
