22 R INK MAGAZ INE november/december 2009 rinsing it off will allow time for the chemical to lift the dirt off of the rubber. This is especially important during winter months when it can be tricky to stay ahead of the patrons that are tracking in dirt and salt. A key to success in this area is using good industrial-grade cleaning products, which not only provide the best results, but can also save time and money. Restrooms are perhaps the most important areas in the facility. Keeping an eye on them multiple times during a shift is a key to success. The same goes for locker rooms and common areas. Staying on top of these areas makes it easier when it comes time to do the thorough cleaning. If these areas are always clean, patrons will recognize it and appreciate the staff for constantly working hard to keep the facility clean. While some facilities have the ability to hire dedicated custodial staff, others may not have the budget to do so. This is where teamwork among the staff is important. In addition to custodial responsibilities, Newhall has been trained to run the ice resurfacer. This has really benefitted the facility since Newhall opens up the rink five days a week in the early morning and can cut a fresh sheet of ice. Teamwork is also key during large events when the entire staff pitches in to help get the rink back in shape. With a public and customer base that is more aware then ever about the cleanliness of the places they frequent, it is good business to train and hire staff to stay ahead, and go above and beyond in the cleaning of your facility! ★ Ben Ruggles is the Director of Rink Operations at the Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass.
