November/December 2009 R IN K M A G AZ I N E 19 STARrinks.com e all struggle to keep our facilities clean, so in this issue we wanted to talk with a couple of guys that not only do it, but do it well. Tony Carteiro and Scott Newhall are the janitors for the Phillips Academy Ice Rink in Andover Mass. Over the years, many skating facilities have hired a dedicated janitorial staff. However, we know it's hard to get part- time and young staff to provide a thorough cleaning of the facility. In fact, expecting part-time and younger workers to really take their time to clean and disinfect the facility is frustrating at best. Your part time and younger staff can and should be expected to keep the facility picked up, but to expect them to take the time for proper disinfecting and cleaning is a stretch. We asked Carteiro and Newhall their secrets. As Carteiro and Newhall see it, keeping up with the crowd is the first step. "It's not like cleaning the boards when you can do it once a year" says Carteiro. "We have to stay ahead of the stick marks on the walls every day." When you walk into an ice facility there are signs at the front entry glass and the rink entry glass doorways whether or not someone is paying attention. This requires spot cleaning the glass entries every day and, once a week, doing a complete entry glass cleaning. W by BEN RUGGLES Tony Carteiro and Scott Newhall have a game plan for keeping their facility clean.
