CPR and AED's. Most swimming pools
will have instructors on their staff that
certify their lifeguard personnel.
Hospitals, fire departments and emer-
gency medical services (EMS) have
instructors as well, but may not offer a
community-geared certification. When
checking around, it's important to ask if
the instruction is geared toward profes-
sional rescuers like fire fighters and
nurses, or first responders.
Most classes will be under 10 hours
and can be broken up into sections over
several nights or weekends.
Certifications typically last at least one
year before they expire.
Other factors to consider before
making a decision:
• Your insurance policy. Some insur-
ance companies will provide discounts on
your premiums or have preferred AED
companies that will give you a discounted
price on an AED's.
Cost: Will your youth hockey associa-
tion or figure skating club help offset the
costs associated with the purchase of an
AED and training costs for staff?
Risk: Is it better to have an AED and
not need it than to need it and not have
it? ★

An AED by definition is an automated
device that "reads" the heart's electri-
cal pulses and determines whether it
should deliver an electrical shock,
called defibrillation.
