S TAR staff members Dave Wescott, director of Facility Programs, and Cory Portner, Director of Membership Development, supported U.S. Figure Skating as Ice Technicians for two figure skating champi- onship competitions in January. Dave Wescott worked with the staff at the (STAR member) Eagles Ice-A-Rena in Spokane, Wash., which was the official practice facility for the AT&T U.S. Figure Skating Championships held at the Spokane Arena January 14-24, 2010. "I enjoyed working with the owners and operators of Eagles Ice-A-Rena, Tim Everson and Dennis Miner. They were great hosts, and did a good job of taking care of the skaters and media," said Wescott. "I would also like to recognize fellow ice technicians Dave Gagnon, Bruce McNally and Dave Gebhardt for their hard work and dedication during this event." Cory Portner worked alongside U.S. Figure Skating Ice Technician Mike Nardella during the Mid-Western/Pacific Coast Synchronized Skating Sectional Championship held at the (STAR member) Cedar Rapids Ice Arena in Cedar Rapids, Iowa Jan. 28-30, 2010. "It was a pleasure working at a venue with staff members that take pride in their facility and the ice conditions overall," said Portner. "Top to bottom, the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena has fundamental opera- tional procedures in place that ensure great conditions for any participant that skates at the venue. Special thanks to Mike Nardella, Jeff Dralle and the entire operations team in Cedar Rapids." Dave and Cory's primary responsibil- ity during these events was to ensure that the ice surfaces used for practice and competition was maintained to the high quality standards expected by U.S. Figure Skating, as well as the competitors. ★ star News 52 R INK MAGAZ INE march/april 2010 STARrinks.com STAR Staff Support U.S. Figure Skating Events
