Highlights of the energy- efficient design and construction of PSU's ice arena: • The building was constructed to meet LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) silver standards. • The integrated ice-making/heating/ cooling system is the most energy-effi- cient system available. • The geothermal system saves energy; provides heating, cooling and hot water for the building; and eliminates the need for use of fossil fuels. • The ice refrigeration system is inte- grated with the geothermal system and uses non-toxic glycol instead of toxic ammonia. Radiant heat is provided through waste heat. • Low-energy interior and exterior lighting save energy and preserve the night sky. • Bioswales in the parking area con- trol and filter storm water, improving the overall quality of water returning to the aquifer. • Efficient plumbing fixtures reduce water use. • The rink uses an emission-free elec- tric Zamboni. • Shuttle service, bike storage and changing rooms at the facility encourage the use of alternative transportation. • Construction of the ice arena fol- lowed sustainable methods such as recy- cling construction waste, use of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified wood products, and use of local materials and contractors. In addition, PSU plans to make the ice arena available to area science classes to provide the opportunity to learn about the various "green" technologies at work in the facility. ★ 16 R INK MAGAZ INE july/august 2010 STARrinks.com featured rink info • Year building opened: July 2010 • Square footage of building: 41,580 sq feet, University owned land • Tenants: Plymouth State University-men's and women's Varsity teams, recreational sports, Health and Wellness classes, public programs (White Mountain Youth Hockey) • Size and Number of Ice Sheets: NHL-size ice arena, 200 feet by 85feet • Number of locker rooms/party rooms: 2 Permanent Varsity locker rooms, 4 visitor locker rooms, 3 official rooms, multipurpose room, Welcome Center • Type of rink floor: Concrete • Refrigeration System: Geothermal, by Ice Kube Systems • Type of dasher boards: Athletica CrystaPlex – Seamless Glass Hockey Boards. • Height of glass and netting: 72 -inch high seamless glass. The biggest differentiator and what sets PSU apart from other ice rinks is the approach to its design. A lot of ice rinks will just utilize a local HVAC or service contractor to size and install their ice plant. However PSU chose to go with a team of engineers and designers to not only pursue LEED Silver certification for their facility, but use the LEED criteria towards a holistic "whole building" approach to ensure the entire building envelope was as energy efficient and sustainable as possible."
