When the Palm Beach Ice Works was in its planning phase, owner Lori Alf had energy savings in mind. Alf installed motion sensing lights and fixtures in all of the locker rooms and restrooms, along with a Low E ceiling and compact fluo- rescent and LED lighting throughout the facility. The rink also features Nevco brand LED scoreboards. Well water irri- gates the facility and supplies water to the cooling towers and ice resurfacers. In addition, Palm Beach Ice Works utilizes a Munters brand dehumidifier and air cur- tains to separate the outside air from the lobby and the lobby air from the arena. Cutting edge audio, intelligent lighting and video display systems were designed and integrated by South Florida's Infinite Audio Systems, Inc. These feature propri- etary speaker systems from EAW (Eastern Acoustics Works) in modules created by Infinite Audio & EAW with acoustic sound deadening panels on the ceilings and walls of the arena to provide precise sound and eliminate echo that often occurs in ice rinks. The custom interior design of Palm Beach Ice Works has made it the most upscale skating facility in South Florida with hallways that are lined with stainless steel panels and customized light fixtures throughout the building. In addition, the rink features profes- sional hockey style locker rooms provid- ing each player with their own seat and space to stow gear. Figure skaters have their own customized locker rooms with benches, chairs, full-length mirrors with stretching bars, storage, showers and make-up counters. Palm Beach Ice Works is home to some of the country's leading figure skat- ing coaches including Ted Kelton, Tracey Potter and Vincent Van Vliet who is Palm Beach Ice Works' skating director. He holds U.S. and International gold medals in free skating, dance, free-dance and "moves in the field," the instructional program skaters must master before competing at the upper levels. 14 R INK MAGAZ INE March/April 2011 STARrinks.com featured rink info • Year building opened: 2009 • Square footage of building: 58,000 square feet • Size and Number of Ice Sheets: 1 Olympic sized rink currently, 2nd pad planned for Phase II development, late 2011 • Number of locker/party rooms: 4 hockey locker rooms, 2 figure skating locker rooms, 2 party areas • Type of rink floor: Concrete • Refrigeration System: Glycol refrigeration, Carrier chiller • Type of dasher boards: Becker Arena Systems • Height of glass and netti ng: 72" at end and 48" on sides. height, 30'; black Kevlar netting • Type of lighting in arena: Florescent T5 high output, fixtures • Resurfacers: Olympia Millennium, with LVR laser System", and 2 Olympia battery powered edgers • Seating capacity: 400+ • Hourly rate of ice time during prime time: $360 • Skating programs: Learn to Skate Group Classes, Ice Dancing, Jump, Spin & Spiral Classes, Open Freestyle Sessions, Test & Competitive Tracks, Moves in Field Stroking, Dartfish Slow Motion Video Analysis, State of the Art Fitness Center and Jump Room, Pilates, Ballet, and Off-Ice Conditioning Classes Monthly Membership Options, Family Skating, Birthday Parties/Private Rentals, Learn to Play Hockey Classes, Youth Hockey Camps and Clinics, Youth/Adult Hockey Leagues, Open Hockey Sessions, Private Hockey Instruction, and hockey tournaments • Significant events hosted at the facility: 2009 Holiday Show with Olympian Patrick Chan, 2010 Holiday Show with Olympic bronze medalist Joannie Rochette, 2 ice shows/year, numerous hockey tournaments, PBIW will be hosting the 8th Annual USFS South Florida Basic Skills Series February 20, 2011, Meet and greet with NHL Florida Panthers at PBIW, February 12, 2011 • Other features: Concessions, retail/pro- shop, game room, Jump room, Dartfish, Rapidshot, Fitness Center, Conference Room, Balcony/Stadium seating with movie theater seats, cutting edge Audio, Intelligent Lighting and Video Display Systems featuring proprietary speaker systems from EAW (Eastern Acoustics Works) • Nationally Ranked Athletes: Jr. National competitor Paolo Borromeo • Number of STAR Trained employees: 3 SIRO and 1 ORM • Interesting tidbit or facts: Palm Beach Ice Works is the home to some of the country's leading figure skating coaches including: Ted Kelton, Vincent van Vilet and Tracey Potter.
