USICERINKS.COM JANUARY.FEBRUARY.2017 / 41 joys of the sport while breaking down the barriers and stigmas about the game being too expensive. "For us, it's kind of fun because in the world of youth sports there's only two sports that are growing right now and a lot of that is driven by Try Hockey For Free," Kevin Erlenbach, USA Hockey director of membership development, said. "We make the rink a very welcom- ing environment where families can start exploring hockey." Each year, between 26,000 to 28,000 new families who have never considered youth hockey make their way to a Try Hockey For Free event at their local rink. The program helps spread awareness for the sport and gain exposure. Erlenbach noted that roughly 23 percent of those kids end up joining their youth association. In most recent series of events on Nov. 12, 2016, 493 locations across the country welcomed 13,582 participants to the game.
