Skating Camps Skating camps are very successful during the summer months. Typically, skating camps can be packaged by the week and cover all ten weeks in the summer. Camps offer intense training opportunities (more hours on the ice, constant supervision, plus off-ice conditioning and educational classes) and are often sold in packaged plans at set rates. A good idea is to offer different package plans and fee structures based upon skating level: Basic Skills, Preliminary-Juvenile, Intermediate- High level test/competitive skaters. Include various off-ice classes to improve overall athletic ability. This keeps skaters in your rink, training at home and busy all day long in a safe, structured environment. Many skaters also use the summer to attend different camps or competitions around the country to experience other areas and training centers. Keys for successful skating camps: • Divide your sessions by skating level/discipline so skaters may achieve the optimal training for the money. • Offer separate moves in the field sessions, as doing moves on free skating sessions can often prove dangerous. • Provide an ice monitor to play music on busy sessions. • Have a place for skaters to hang out, eat snacks/lunch and socialize while waiting for their next session. • Welcome guest or out-of-town coaches to bring their skaters for additional training. • Offer contract skaters incentives to buy volumes — discounts/priority registration dates. • List all nearby accommodations (hotels or dorms) in your brochure for out-of-town skaters and transportation options to and from rink. Summer Exhibitions Exhibitions are a great opportunity for skaters to show off in the spotlight, and what figure skater doesn't love that?
