approval granted in late March. Clearing of the land was started in April of 2007, and construction of the facility began in the first week of May. The ice facility was opened on November 3rd, and the turf fields opened one month later. The ice rink was built to be the home arena for the East Coast Wizards girls' select program and the Boston Jr. Eagles boys' select program, two of the premier youth hockey organizations in New England. The rink also provides additional ice for the Lexington/Bedford Youth Hockey program and has become the home ice for the Bedford High School hockey team. The high school team was able to trade practice at 5 a.m. in a neighboring town for a 2:30 p.m. practice on ice two miles from the school in this new facility. These major tenants use approximately 75% of the available ice time in the facility. The remaining ice time will be taken by private and small group hockey training, a hockey development program, hockey camps, training programs, and adult league play. The rink also houses a vibrant skating program with figure skating and learn to skate offerings. There are several skating classes each week as well as drop-in figure skating time. The six hours of public skating time are very well attended. The indoor turf field is utilized by the soccer, lacrosse and baseball youth march/april 2008 R IN K M A G AZ I N E 13 Due to the high level of support in the local community, the duration of the project from design to the first day of skating was only 15 months.
