may/june 2008 R IN K M A G AZ I N E 31 Patrons filed out of the facility as directed to proper exits. fake fire alarm pull station mounted to a pole, and then the real fire alarm was set off by engineering. Arena staff went to their designated areas and started to direct patrons to the proper exits. Community rink staff directed all adult hockey league players and spectators to exit into the rink lobby, and the conference center staff directed their United Way event customers to the ballroom fire exits. The total time to empty the entire events center was approximately three minutes. On the following day, arena part-time staff, full-time staff and representatives from the EPD, EFD and Everett Emergency Management Department were asked to email their observations of the drill to the Director of Facilities and/or Operations Manager. This information would be compiled into a report for the safety committee to review at their next meeting. Overall the drill was a success, but two areas were identified as needing future improvement as a result of this exercise. The fire alarm siren and PA announcements were barely loud enough to be heard over the crowd noise, so the volume would have to be increased. Also, the number of patrons exiting through one of the exits was a bit too large, so more people would have to be directed to a different exit in the future. ★ Jeff Theiler is the Ice Rink Manager at the Comcast Community Ice Rink.
