14 R INK MAGAZ INE may/June 2008 The BCRA turned to Rink Management Services to assist with project design and consulting. Schaefer Construction Management, Inc. was hired to oversee the construction component of the project. The architect was Paul J. Gorman Architects, Inc. The site engineering was handled by Site Resources Incorporated and the mechanical design was done by BERA Engineers, Inc. This team, all Maryland- based companies, created the construction drawings and bid specifications. Nine companies submitted bids for the public project, and Total Site Contractors of Baltimore was the successful bidder for the general contracting work. Construction took ten months and cost $6 million. Besides the NHL-sized ice rink and the indoor turf field, the Reisterstown Sportsplex features six locker rooms, a separate referee's room, two large birthday party rooms, a snack bar, skate rentals and offices for both the facility staff and County Rec and Park's staff. "This is a very efficient design that incorporates minimizing operational and energy costs as the key of the design criteria," stated Hale. "We also will have the ability to add another surface should the demand warrant it." Cimco Refrigeration of Mobile, Alabama, supplied and installed a 120-ton indirect refrigeration plant, and Cascadia Sports Systems of Port Moody, Canada, supplied and installed the boards for both the ice rink and the turf field. The Reisterstown Sportsplex used a Munters A-30 dehumidification for climate control and also installed a Low-E ceiling. DOC Turf Installation of Crofton, Md., was selected to install the turf. Rink Management Services was selected through a national RFP process in the spring of 2007 to manage the building and program the ice surface. "It has been gratifying to work with such a first-class organization from the inception through the actual operations stage," said Tom Hillgrove, president of the company. "The building came in on budget and included all the amenities necessary to be successful. It has already been well-received by the community, and we look forward to working with the local figure skating and youth hockey associations to create new skaters. Having the indoor turf field included is bringing a whole new set of kids and their parents through the building, and the synergies of the two components will help both." ★ • Year building opened – 2008 • Square footage of building and land – Building 58,000 square feet on 8 acres • Featured tenants – Ice and soccer, party rooms, concession, Parks and Recreation office • Size and number of ice surfaces – Ice rink 200' x 85', soccer field 180' x 80' • Number of locker rooms/party rooms – 7 locker rooms, 2 party rooms • Type of rink floor – Concrete • Type & manufacturer of refrigeration system – Ammonia, Brine system by Cimco • Manufacturer of dasher board s – Cascadia Sport Systems • Height of glass & netting – 6' glass all around and netting to ceiling • Type of lighting – Fluorescent • Year, model, fuel source and manufacturer of IR's – 2008 Olympia – Propane • Hourly rate of prime ice time – $265 • Seating capacity – 500 • Listing of skating programs – LTS, LTPH, In House Youth Hockey, Adult League, Freestyle Sessions, Pick up hockey for youth and adult, Stick and pick sessions, public sessions and broomball group • Significant eve nt hosted at the facility – Brother Andrew Cup, Huron Hockey camps; Chesapeake Open Figure Skating Competition; Susquehanna Rapids Girls Team; Battle of the Blues Police/Firemen Team Benefit Game (the Chesapeake Open is big figure skating competition for the area) • National ranked athletes training at facility – Alex McGowan, instructor – Olympic participant several years ago • Interesting tidbit or fact about facility – Only public ice rink in Baltimore County.
