44 ISSUE 95 / 2016 INDIE That Poppy has made a career from appearing on an eponymous Youtube channel – That Poppy. 80s Scottish rock band The Jesus Mary Chain made it big with hits like 'Just Like Honey' and 'April Skies'. The Youtube channel posts well-edited videos of Poppy performing in surreal sketches that question music, literature and reality. Their philosophical nature has led some to question Poppy's seriousness as an artist, instead citing her ironic or satirical approach to pop music. Personally, I think she just posts weird videos on Youtube, hey ho. Why not eh? It's certainly built hype around her as a musician and led to her being picked up by a major label, so so far so good as far as promotional tactics and genuinely interesting material go. In 2015 Island Records released her first single 'Lowlife'. 'Lowlife' is alright pop music but nothing groundbreaking. Let's hope her next set of releases matches up to her previous performance in art, originality, style and content, as she has an incredible foundation for a music career. Their alternative indie was a contrast to the electronic music output of the time and got them recognised along with their short, violent gigs. The band has got a new album coming out, scheduled for release in March. It will be the band's first release in over 18 years. To support the album, the band are touring this year in March and April. GUESTLIST RECOMMANDS: POPPY EVENT REVIEW: THE JESUS AND MARY CHAIN GET GIGGING ARTIST OF THE MONTH: JUST ALEX Canadian singer, songwriter and producer Just Alex is one to watch for 2017 On his debut radio single 'Little Things' the emerging Montreal-based musician is joined by fast-rising musician and fellow Canadian native Yan Etchevary. 'Little Things' is a product of both musicians studying at the prestigious Campus Notre-Dame-De-Foy in 2011. Backed by glorious vocal melodies, lush drum arrangements, and an infectious chorus. Which will get you singing along. The record's uncanny New Orleans' vibe matches its hope- oriented theme, to deliver a beautifully unforgettable listening experience.
