The top four piece band from Chelmsford have released a quality track, 'Lightning Parade' taken from their upcoming debut album The World Lit Up And Filled With Colour. Dropping in March on SO Recordings, it'll be the bands first full length release - and if the first single is anything to go by we'll be in for a treat! The band have already seen some success, performing at major festivals including Leeds, Isle of White and Secret Garden Party. After hearing their single we wanted to find out a little more, so had a quick chat with Scott Revell, Secret Company's singer and guitarist. What have you been up to lately? Getting Christmas out the way I guess. I went to Vietnam in December actually and boycotted it all...as nice as it is. Was good to get away for a bit though and Vietnam is an incredibly interesting place, couldn't have felt less Christmassy if I tried. Tell us a bit about 'Alive'? It's about breaking out of being stuck in a rut. There will always be people and excuses that will hold you back but this song is about getting past that and making your own way out whether that's by yourself or with someone else before it's too late! What's a song that changed your life? ACTUALLY life changing, hmmmm I'd say that'd have to be a song early on in life. One that sticks out in my mind is 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' by Nirvana. Overplayed now, but when I was about 14 and hearing it for the first time, it was outrageous. Of course I bought 'Nevermind' soon after that and played the crap out of it. I bought a guitar around that time too, so all in all it had a big effect on me. How do you describe your sound in conversation? With great difficulty, it's a tough question, usually I say something like 'indie, pop, rock' and assume that, that specific description is all they need. Then I swiftly change the subject. What was it like making your upcoming album? Making an album is something we've all strived toward for quite a long time now. I guess ever since hearing those life changing songs early on as a teen, you dream of it being YOU up on stage and how cool it'd be to make your own album. It's of course a hell of a lot different when it comes around, but that early aspiration is still burning in there. It had its big buzz moments and also its tiny tedious ass hole moments! We recorded it with a good mate of ours, who is somewhat of a tech wizard and we all worked real hard writing, rehearsing, and tweaking our parts to perfect it. We're really proud of it and just can't wait for people to hear it now. What instruments were involved in the making of the new album? Well aside from the obvious ones, guitars, bass, drums, soft synths, vocals etc. On the last track, 'Blue Rose' I wrote it on an old organ that my Gran gave to me. It sounds a bit ridiculous by itself, but chuck on a load of delay and reverb and BAM, jobs a gooden. What are you listening to right now? Truth be told I am currently sitting in silence, I was listening to 'Honey & The Moon' by Joseph Arthur a minute ago. What's next for Secret Company? We're very eager for people to hear the album which we'll be kicking off with our album launch party on the 10th March! After that we'll just be trying to promote it where we can through festivals over the summer and then touring later on in the year. Very much looking forward to writing too, so will be doing that amongst everything else this year! What's the worst job you've ever had? I haven't had any jobs that have been THAT unbearably bad. Working with general public at a supermarket is pretty crappy. Once some guy was paying for something and did that classic thing where you give the cashier the extra odd pence so the change is an even number. It had been a long day and I took a little longer to calculate what he had done (by little I'm talking TINY SECONDS!) and he had the nerve to say to me in such a superior, self righteous, arrogant way 'what's wrong, didn't you do maths in school?' What a punk, he must've really hated himself to be so horrible to a 17 year old kid. Maybe he's dead now? Are you more rock and roll or more stay at home? I believe it's all about balance good sir. What are you most looking forward to right now? In all honesty, I reeeeeeeally just wanna grab my skateboard and go for a skate, but its drenched outside. If you could have a swimming pool full of anything, what would it be? Custard. I discovered something amazing the other day, those sachets of custard powder…just add boiling water and BAM you got yourself a 3/4 pint of full on yellow dreamy custard… Fucking magical. A whole swimming pools worth wouldn't be an excessive amount either. Quite reasonable. If you were an ice cream flavour, what would it be? Raspberry cheesecake or something I reckon. Kinda craving that now. We catch up with Essex based indie pop group, Secret Company. "ONE THAT STICKS OUT IN MY MIND IS 'SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT' BY NIRVANA."
