The Fund is a co-operative crowdfunding platform that allows users to set up numerous regular donations to independent media organisations across the UK with maximum simplicity. The website will also provide a regular summary of the key stories from across the world of alternative media, bringing together organisations such as Novara Media, Open Democracy, and New Internationalist. "Alternative media has exploded in the past ten years – creating a fantastic range of different voices and perspectives on current affairs," the team behind the Fund told Real Media. "But these new sites keep coming up against the obstacle of funding. Without the money to pay journalists and editors, these sites can only do so much. At the moment in the UK, the media is dominated by old-fashioned and out- of-touch news platforms, controlled by billionaire moguls, multi-national corporations, or the state. Alternative media is crucial to breaking the power of old elites – but to survive it needs reliable funding." The Fund's creators are hoping to see an increase in regular donations to independent media in the wake of the launch. "Independent media is vital in providing a space for stories and conversations that the usual media won't have. With proper funding we can make our own news and #ownthemedia." The union demanded 100% of the service charge be given to staff, and called for more transparency. There is not any legal requirement for Harrods to hand over the money, although that may change as the government has promised action and it held a public consultation last year. In the meantime, there is only a voluntary code of practice in place, organised by the British Hospitality Association and although other major luxury hotel and restaurant chains have joined, Harrods is not listed as a member of this voluntary code. Harrods has also reported record profits for the last four years. 'It costs some workers up to £5000 a year,' Petros – General Secretary of the union told Real Media. 'When you leave a tip, do you think it's going to the bosses? Do you think it's going into the pockets of the richest family on earth?' The union has already succeeded in securing a pay rise for staff, with Harrods agreeing to share a greater portion of the service charge with workers. But the union says they will be keep returning until 100% of the service charge is given to staff. Grassroots union, United Voices of the World, which represents low-paid workers in London, held a protest outside Knightsbridge Harrods on 7th January over waiter and chef tips. After a successful £10000 fundraising campaign, The Media Fund was launched on December 10th and the organisation is set to transform the UK's alternative media scene.
