50 ISSUE 100 / 2017 REGGAE TRACK OF THE MONTH: DOUBLE TIGER The eight time Grammy winner, Emmy winner and philanthropist Ziggy Marley was awarded the 'Gershwin Lifetime Musical Achievement Award' at UCLA's Spring Sing. Brooklyn-based artist Double Tiger (aka Jay Spaker) blends progressive roots with sound system culture in his latest track 'Sharp & Ready'. Set to released on June the 30th the song speaks on revolution and rising up, while simultaneously also reminding us of the power of love. This can also be seen in the arrangement of the single, it goes from the usual roots rock reggae, to energetic dancehall all the way down to a rub-a-dub which transforms it into a love jam. Spaker says he did this intentionally because," it's a very important time to make positive and uplifting music with the political climate, the many injustices & environmental issues. So many heavy things in the world right now and music has the power to heal and create change so I feel it is a duty of musicians to spread joy, heal and inspire." Established in 1988, in honour of George and Ira Gershwin for their contribution to American music, Marley joins the ranks of Frank Sinatra, Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles, who are among the past recipients of the award. Over the course of three decades Ziggy has released 16 albums, was the first reggae artist to tour China & Dubai, plus he's global humanitarian and charitable initiatives in Africa, Israel, Jamaica and North America, make him more than worthy of the 'Gershwin Lifetime' award. Addressing a crowd of 7,000 at UCLA's Pauley Pavilon,Ziggy reminded the audience in closing speecch to always act with an open mind and compassion in their daily lives. NEWS: ZIGGY MARLEY IS FIRST REGGAE ARTIST TO RECEIVE LIFETIME AWARD ALBUM OF THE MONTH: SIZZLA As one of the most commercially and critically successful reggae artists out today, Sizzla has carved a name out for himself with his punchy lyrics & soulful harmonies. Back with his latest album Fought For Dis, this LP does not disappoint. Kicking off things with 'Fought For Dis', a thought provoking tune that will leave you wondering whether we have learnt from the past. The song touches on issues like skin bleaching and knowing your African heritage. Packed full of heavy riddims and propelled by a saxophone & rhythm guitar, it transitions perfectly into the next song 'Freedom'. Featuring the legendary hip hop duo Dead Prez. The song is a hip hop/reggae hybrid that touches on the priceless nature of freedom. Two more artists join Sizzla in the booth for the track 'Happy For You', Capleton and Vershon bring a more chilled out atmosphere to the single. 'Show More Love', Don't Worry' & 'Children Are The Future' are also more mellow in nature. The follow up tracks 'Much More' & 'Take My Breath Away' are ear- catchers from start to finish, the smooth beats coupled with their uplifting messages make them an easy listen.
