The Waterville League rules specify a total of seven players on the ice (5 men/2 women) including the goalie, with roster limits placed at a maximum of twenty. No checking is permitted. Each game consists of three 15-minute running time periods. There are two officials on the ice using a modified version of hockey rules for offici- ating. In 2008-09 there were six teams in the league (historically, there have been as many as eleven). The season usually begins in November and ends in March. With six teams participating, the regular season is ten games (teams playing each other twice). The age of the participants ranges from 18 to 50+! From time to time, fun "pickup" games (both pre-season and during the summer months) are sched- uled—a great way to experience the sport! The Waterville Valley Broomball League has been supported through the years by Capitol Distributors of Concord, NH, and Pabst Brewing Company, provid- ing trophies and funding for the annual WV Broomball League post-season awards banquet. Local area merchants promote their services through sponsor- ship or co-sponsorship of the participat- ing teams, helping with the costs for ice time and referees. The team sponsors' names are posted in the arena; several teams include the sponsor's name(s) or logo on the team jersey and in local area media. Team sponsors range from busi- nesses to individuals. Some teams have as many as three co-sponsors, splitting the costs of the league fees. The league fee in 2009 was $1,000 per team. Broomball is a sport for all ages. Marketed as "the alternative team sport on ice," broomball offers a less-confronta- tional alternative to ice hockey and can be a great way to attract new users to your facilities. ★ may/june 2009 R IN K M A G AZ I N E 55 STARrinks.com CDIMS Controlled Dehumidification Solutions 29235 Lorie Lane, P.O.
