100 ■ THE WOLVERINE 2017 FOOTBALL PREVIEW DEFENSIVE LINE 100 ■ THE WOLVERINE 2017 FOOTBALL PREVIEW DEFENSIVE LINE PLAYER BIOS POSITION COACH Greg Mattison is entering his third season as defen- sive line coach under Jim Harbaugh and his seventh year consecutively on the U-M staff after previously holding the role of defensive coor- dinator for Brady Hoke from 2011- 14. He's in his second stint with the Wolverines, having also worked in Ann Arbor from 1992-96, when he mentored the defensive line and served as the coordinator his final two years. During the 2016 season, Mattison's defensive front helped Michigan hold eight opponents without a rush- ing touchdown, while 44.5 percent of the opponents' possessions ended in a three-and-out. The Wolver- ines also totaled double-digit tackles for loss in eight games. In 2015, Mattison helped Michigan's defense hold the opposition to fewer than 100 rushing yards in seven games and to fewer than 60 in five. For the first time since 1980, U-M's defense forced a shutout in three consecutive games. After starting off in the prep ranks, Mattison secured his first job coaching the defensive line with Cornell in 1977 and spent the next 18 years of his coach- ing career working with the fronts at Northwestern (1978-80), Western Michigan (1982-86), Navy (1987- 88), Texas A&M (1989-91) and Michigan (1992-96). He also held coordinator roles with the Broncos and Wolverines. Mattison also coached at Notre Dame (1997-2004) and Florida (2005-07) before a three-year stint with the NFL's Baltimore Ravens (2008-10) under John Har- baugh, coordinating the defense his final two seasons there before returning to U-M to work for Hoke.
