16 6 FASHION www.guestlist.net Issue 43 2012 Shirt: Cottweiler Shorts: Cottweiler T-shirt: cottweiler Jacket: Fanny & Jessy The popular DJ raised in Hawaii, takes her own way to be the queen of house scene. In an exclusive fashion shoot with Alea Balzer| alea.balzer@gmail.com So for the first two albums you were the front woman for Hercules & Love Affair. But now you are working on solo things.. Yes. You can hear the difference between performing with Hercules & Love Affair and DJing solo I did it for three years with them and it was really fun. And with DJing, I was a DJ before and so, I never really got so nervous DJing the way that performing live makes you nervous, so it's kind of exciting. So you brought out your debut, "Creature/What You Need" EP about a year and half ago. And how has that been received? I didn't expect it to get as much feedback as it did, so I was really surprised and happy that it did. What is the song "Creature" about? It's actually about my girlfriend! (laugh) And what was the inspiration behind the video-clip? It was my girlfriend who art-directed the videoclip but it was all of my friends who contributed their own things So it seems like you have been groomed for this lifestyle from quite a young age Its true, but I did reject it.. You rejected your title! I did! I gave up my crown (laugh). My mum really wanted me to be a beauty were only 5 contestants in this pageant and they were all super ghetto so I ended up winning anyway! So now, what would you say your relationship is with fashion? I wouldn't say I am super fashion person because I don't really keep up with the latest designers. I consider myself to just I never really got so nervous DJing the way that performing live makes you nervous into the video. The big inspiration is a combination of old Nenah Cherry videos. It came out way better than I had even imagined it. I heard that when you were young you won a beauty pageant as a child. I did queen, she basically got me to be in this Philipino wife pageant and I cried backstage because I really didn't want to be in it! I didn't want to wear the lipstick and wear an evening gown, and I remember she was pulling my hair trying to give me a French braid. It was a nightmare. I also refused to do the talent; I tried everything not to win. But there wear whatever I feel comfortable in. I'm not going to wear cha cha heels to the club or anything you know. I feel lucky that I have lots of fashionable friends and designers friends in my circle of friends so I think it just rubs off on me And musically, what are you working on at the moment? Musically, I'm working on a lot of things, I have a solo release coming out at the end of September and it's called Return It and the other side is called Hypnotic Dance. And then I basically have plans to do a solo album and a lot of underground too, stuff that I'm producing myself and putting out. Well, thank you very much Kim Thank you!
