46 REGGAE / DANCE HALL www.guestlist.net MORGAN HERITAGE Issue 43 / 2012 The five members of Morgan's family meet again to get the roots reggae back on the scene. Una Morgan, vocalist/keybordits, tell us about their new project. Mr Wondah | mrwondah@guestlist.net What was life like growing up for you? From the minute ya came out the womb were ya given an instrument? My dad knew that I was gonna sing which was an interesting story. When I was a baby and I would cry, he said, he would say 'Ima', that's Hebrew for moth- er, he would 'Ima that baby a gonna sing ya know, she's gonna be a singer' by just the way I cried. So what you just said was funny like 'right outta the womb you were given an instrument' well kinda sort of my dad knew by my cry that I was gonna be a singer. He gave us the lessons, he gave us the instruments, the tools to hewn our craft to become ya know what we are today. Big up to our father, daddy for making all that's possible today become a manifestation through all the foundational basis that he made sure that we had. A lot of people recognise Morgan Heritage by the classic, the absolute classis 'down by the river', ya know obviously, what's the creative history of that? My brother Peter and Grabs and myself, we were singing, we were basically having a vocal rehearsal but it was in the bath fountain, he started adlibbing 'we're singing down by the river'. Bob Marley has been key to the popularity that album'. We're on a four week promo tour now; Europe is a major part of that tour. The full fledge new album tour is definitely coming next year. Like I said we'll be touching every crevice and corner. We never disbanded we were the best of both worlds, so that's how you get it in our music, you know our mother and father is Jamaican, we had a Jamaican culture in our home, the way we were raised, but when we went to school it's a whole other ya know... MY DAD KNEW BY MY CRY THAT I WAS GONNA BE A SINGER of Jamaica and now sport is trailing right behind so we need to be proud for a little country, that small. And having such a big influence on popular culture ya know. What can we expect from the EP? And once you're done with that what can we expect from the album in terms of artistic collaborations? We want it to be an album that every- body kinda says 'this is what we've been missing'. The EP is kinda letting everyone know 'look guys here's a prequel for what you're gonna get on always together, we just needed some time, we're all parent. We had to do the mother, father thing for some time because we were always on the road. We're here, the return is real, it's Morgan Heritage for life. You grew up and were born in New York? Is it New York you're from? Yeah, that has a lot to do, where we were raised, where we were born. Because we were born in Brooklyn and every summer we were down there, but we got our education in Massachusetts, Springfield Massachusetts. And we had You had to keep up with W RnB... Oh my God we're definitely from a Hip Hop culture, it's ridiculous. Erm some- times the lyrics come first, sometimes the music comes first, it just depends on where the inspiration come from and whichever one does come first you go with the flow. What would you say is the most challenging thing for Jamaicans and Jamaica at the moment? For Jamaicans at large? I think one of the most challenging things for human being is to treat another human being the way you want to be treated. We believe that is the key to a lot the issues we have as mankind. If you could be invisible for one day, what would you do? What would I do if I could be invisible for one day? (laughs) Enjoy being invisible for one day (laughs) 'The Return', produced by Shane Brown, is their five track teaser EP, which comes after five years of silence, in which band members were trying to push their own careers. But there is strength in num- bers, so expect an European tour and new album for 2013. Catch more details on them at morganheritagemusic.com
