In your own words what's the past 5 years been like? It's been a crazy whirlwind of exciting opportunities and living my dream that I'm extremely grateful for. Highlights have been travelling the world from new Zealand to Brazil, playing some of the great clubs like DC10 , Fabric , D-Edge and being able to make so many people happy through my music. Truly grateful. Your sound has evolved since your first release, how would you describe it at the moment? I've never thought I have had a sound. I guess I did early on with those sweet melodic vocals and floaty synths. I'm pretty diverse nowadays, I am making stompers and more melodic stuff at the moment. Where do you draw your inspiration from when you hit the studio? Sometimes I go in the studio with an idea, whether it a sample or a drum loop or a melody I've played. Other times I go in there and just see what happens. I have loads of weird and different music I've made that I just don't know where to place. Sometimes I'm like right I need to make a banger that the DJs will play peak time and that's what I try to do. I also grab a handful of vinyl's from my collection and just try to find little weird hooks or sounds I like, that can be the starting point of a track. My influence musically is very broad, everything over the years from the acid house era in the UK, to drum and bass, to today's house and techno, and everything in between. Non electronic is everything from Chopin to guns n roses. It's one big melting pot. You're playing on the main stage at Eastern Electrics on August 5th with the mighty Carl Cox, ÂME, Waze & Odyssey and more. What have you got in store for your set? If I'm honest I don't have my set time yet, so I can't tell you exactly. However, festivals are different from club sets it's more about the bigger tunes. I'll probably look to road test some of my new music though for sure if it fits. Can't wait though, I am really excited cause I have heard great things about EE. Have you got any plans for a album soon? it's something I've discussed with my manager and something that I would definitely want to do at some point. When I do it it's got to be a broad representation of myself at that point. So it needs all different styles of electronic music in it. It wouldn't be a tech/deep house or even just a straight house album. I'd want to go wider. I have actually been working on some different bits which you never know could appear on something in a couple of years down the line. Let's see. You have quite a lot of vinyl, do you currently still buy vinyl or do you keep things digital when you perform? I've been playing digital lately but I love vinyl, I love the sound, the feel and the action of playing it. It's how I started and played for over 10 years. As it goes I'm going to Phonica this week to buy a load of new bits . Excited! What else have you got in the pipeline for 2017? Release wise, next up is a release on Santé and Sydney Charles' Avotre label with a lead track called 'Purple Jackets', which I am very excited about people hearing. It's got my old sound of sweet vocals but rolling and pumping to fit into today's sets. I think fans of 'I Know' and my older tracks will like it. Then we have an EP on Green Velvet's Relief with a collab from myself and Green Velvet. Then it's an EP on Material. There's another 12 tracks in the bank and loads more being made as we speak. Gig wise we are currently planning Asia and Australia, South America. I have Kata Blau in Berlin coming up, Fabric Room 2 in a couple of weeks and loads of other bits. It's all super exciting! 2017 / ISSUE 101 29 Known as one of dance music's "true aficionado's " Alexis Raphael has been earning his house stripes as early as the 90s.
