For those who have never been fans of rap music, he is probably known better for his acting career than as a pioneer of Gangsta Rap. Having recently been honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, many would imagine that Ice Cube's days of hard-hitting lyricism were a thing of the past. In fact, that couldn't be further from the truth. The reality is that Cube's presence in the rap game looms larger than ever, with his rhymes just as vivid and as socially and politically charged as in his N.W.A heyday. And nowhere is that more apparent than in this latest track 'Good Cop Bad Cop'. Released earlier this month, 'Good Cop Bad Cop' is an entirely fresh track and, as its title suggests, it is a track filled with questions for both the U.S Police Officers who truly protect and serve the community, and those po- lice officers who abuse their authority and give the rest a bad name. Cube has always been at his best when detailing the happenings of Westside California, and this track is no exception. His longstanding fans will be most pleased with his latest offering. PLAYLIST 04:44 Jay Z Flower Boy Tyler The Creator Drunk Thundercat Atrocity Exhibition Danny Brown The hip hop & rnb on our playlist this month Miami-based producer, record label executive, radio personality and recent author (seriously) DJ Khaled is back with his hotly anticipated record Grateful. A new report from Nielsen shows that the combined genre of hip hop & rnb has become the most dominant genre in US music consumption. GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS: DJ KHALED For the first time ever, rap now controls "25.1 per cent of all music consumption" in comparison's to rock's 23 per cent. The genre's success is mainly down to streaming, with Spotify even declaring that hip hop was the most "dominant genre throughout the world in 2015," and that was based mainly on streams. However, the obvious issue with Nielsen's claims is the questionable decision to "lump hip hop and R&B into a single category." Even though the lines between both genres has become increasingly blurred over recent years, they still stand as two very different styles of music. Taking the current statistics into account, we can only wonder what the actual figures would be if the two genres where judged individually. Grateful starts off with tracks such as 'Wild Thoughts' and 'I'm The One' already proven to be chart toppers and then the LP gradually descends into more generic trap records. Whatever you think of DJ Khaled he must be doing something right to get Jay-Z & Beyonce on 'Shining' as well as legends Fat Joe and Raekwon on 'Billy Ocean'. Some elements of the album are great, others are just grating (see 'Major Bag Alert' featuring Migos). There are also odd pauses from the 'drugs, money and hoes' chat with strange yet sweet mentions of fatherhood. The album finishes off with Khaled thanking his son Asahd for 'executive producing' the record. Boy, is that kid gonna have an interesting life.
