Ammara Essa strides through a Verizon office, ex- plaining to a curious visitor why the Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone works best on the company's wireless network. Silicon Valley actor Thomas Middleditch appears in the role of the visitor, but Ammara Essa is a real-life Verizon employee. And she is clearly the star. A system performance engineer in the company's Irvine, CA, office, she holds a master's degree in electrical engineering from UCLA and has been an employee of Verizon for seven years. This new ad campaign is designed to show actual Verizon employees at work. However, the title "Verizon system performance engineer" might conjure an image of a white male in glasses—probably not a woman.
