People O'Shea takes on GM post at Langham Hospitality SHANGHAI – John O'Shea has been appointed General Manager, The Langham, Xintiandi, Shanghai effective immediately. A distinguished hotelier, John has more than 30 years experience in the hospitality industry, 18 of which were as a general manager or managing director for high profile hotels in his native country Australia as well as Thailand, Malaysia, Japan and China. Throughout his career, he has consistently shown strong leadership skills which have seen many of the hotels under his guidance win international and regional awards during his tenure. Although he has been based in Shanghai since 2007 and worked as managing director of a leading fi ve- star hotel in Pudong. The Langham, Xintiandi is his fi rst appointment as a General Manager with the Langham Hospitality Group. One of the highlight's of his career to date was receiving the Magnolia Silver Award in 2010 from the Shanghai Municipal People's Government in recognition for his outstanding contribution to the local community. The Magnolia Silver Award honours foreign citizens who live and work in Shanghai and have made signifi cant contributions to the city's economic development, social progress and international relations and cooperation. The Award was set up by the Shanghai Municipal Government in 1989 and remains the highest recognition for foreign citizens living in Shanghai. Events Evans is Etihad's new GM for the Philippines PHILIPPINES – Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has appointed John Evans as its new general manager for the Philippines. John has more than 35 years of experience in airline operations including senior management roles at Swissair and Gulf Air in the UK and Thailand. He has transferred to the Manila-based position from Cyprus, where he was Etihad Airways' General Manager for the past year. Peter Baumgartner, Chief Commercial Officer of Etihad Airways, said he was delighted to welcome John to the airline's Asia Pacific South commercial leadership team. "John brings to the role a great depth of international sales and general management experience that will guide the next phase of our growth in the Philippines market. "The Abu Dhabi-Manila route is one of the most important in Etihad Airways' network and provides a vital trade, tourism and cultural link between the UAE, the GCC and the Philippines. "With John leading our well- established local team in Manila, we are assured of its continuing success." John assumed his role on September 6, reporting to Mr Lindsay White, Etihad Airways' Vice- President for Asia Pacific South and Australasia. Etihad Airways commenced services to the Philippines in February 2006. Today, the airline operates 14 services a week to Manila with a mixed fl eet of Boeing B777 and Airbus A330-200 aircraft confi gured in two classes – Pearl Business and Coral Economy. Events Tompkins is MD for Amadeus China Following the opening of China markets for foreign airlines to introduce their air fares via GDSs, Amadeus has appointed industry veteran Bart Tompkins as managing director for Amadeus China. 8 Tompkins' career with the GDS has spanned over 20 years. He is responsible for all Amadeus' activities in the country. This includes looking for business opportunities and ensuring the Chinese travel industry and market place understand Amadeus' offering. He has been instrumental in identifying new market opportunities for Amadeus, including central and Eastern Europe, Russia, Japan as well as Africa & the Middle East. Additionally, he has held roles in North America and Spain in strategic planning and operations. Before joining Amadeus, Tompkins worked for various UK tour operators. He holds an honours degree in Law and Social Anthropology from Jesus College, Cambridge University, and an MBA with distinction in International Business from London University Business School. He speaks English and Spanish. Tompkins commented, "Amadeus has played an important role in helping to grow the travel industry across Asia and the rest of the world and we look forward to playing a similar role here in China. We welcome the opportunity to be part of China's on-going success and believe that all industry stakeholders would benefi t greatly from modern distribution technologies, such as the technology we offer." Events Centara Grand in Hua Hin appoints new Director of Sales Jacques Mury, General Manager of Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin has announced the appointment of Anucha Suphan as Director of Sales of Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin, a member of the Leading Hotels of the World. Anucha has more than 15 years experience in sales at many leading hotels in Thailand. He started his career at Marriott Hotels & Resorts and worked there for seven years. He was Sales Manager before moving to work at Centara Hotels & Resorts in 2004 as Senior Sales Manager. Anucha worked with Centara Hotels & Resorts for three years and was responsible for many properties including Centara Grand Beach Resort Samui, Centara Villas Phuket, Centara Villas Samui, and Waterfront Suites Phuket by Centara. Subsequently he was Director of Sales at Eastin Hotel Makksan in 2007. He then rejoined Centara Hotels & Resorts where for two years he was Assistant Director of Sales responsible for travel agencies both locally and internationally, covering the Middle East, South Africa and India markets, before being appointed Director of Sales at Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin.
