GUESTLIST 2017 / ISSUE 102 15 FASHION MATT AND NAT PROVE YOU CAN BE A FASHION GURU WITH A GUILT-FREE CONSCIENCE F-ABRIC, MAKING SUSTAINABLE FASHION BADASS! The name 'Matt and Nat' means 'material' & 'nature'. It proves that a connection can be made harmoniously between the two. A pioneer in the world of sustainable fabrics, Markus and Daniel Freitag have launched F-ABRIC, a biodegradable textile produced in Europe. Matt and Nat are a cruelty-free fashion brand who specialise in bags, but also have purses, shoes, and other gift-style goods. The brand visits each factory that creates their products and works on building strong personal relationships with suppliers. This allows them to be 100% sure they are collaborating with ethical companies, as they see the production first-hand. They also use all sustainable materials such as cork and rubber. The linings inside all Matt & Nat bags are made out of 100% recycled plastic bottles - and they have a lot of bags! Not only do Matt and Nat possess some sick ethics but their clothes are simplistically beautiful, and built from quality. From the experience of one of the team members here at Guestlist, their products stand the test of time! If you love the leather look, their faux leather does not look tacky or fake. Their whole aesthetic is minimal and delicate, which reflects the vegan movement in a good way. Often if people say 'vegan fashion' you might think of sandals & socks, baggy trousers...a real hippy look, that doesn't really scream style. Matt and Nat defeat these stereotypes effortlessly. Made from the fibres of hemp and flax, each piece can be put onto the compost pile at the end of its life and recycled to create something new! Freitag started back in 1993 when the two graphic designers wanted a durable, waterproof bag to carry their work in. After experimenting with truck tarpaulins, bicycle inner tubes and car seat belts, they created a messenger bag that was a hit all over their native city, Zurich and beyond, with customers all over Europe and even Asia. As well as the popular F13 bag, Freitag also creates wearable, everyday pieces from jeans to dresses. Their cotton-free denim is 81% linen and 19% true hemp, while their super-soft, breathable t-shirts are 75% modal. Similar to cotton, the fabric is created from beech-wood extracts and the beech trees reproduce naturally so no planting is needed. At £50 for a t-shirt, Freitag's products might not be in everybody's price range, but it's a small price to pay knowing the garments will last for years to come, and be given a new lease of life once recycled.
