Get ready to reminisce to some iconic tunes from legendary girl group Salt-N- Pepa. As one of the first all-female rap crews to break through in a male dominated industry, Salt-N-Pepa have been breaking a number of doors for women in hip-hop since the late 80's. With party anthems, driven by big beats and littered with pro feminist lyrcisim, the trio's music has contin- ued to inspire and elevate generations of rappers and listeners. Songs like 'Let's Talk About Sex', 'Whatta Man' 'Push It' & 'Shoop' continue to rake in fans from new to old, and as the group get ready to perform at the SSE Arena in Wembley on the 29th of September; alongside Vanilla Ice, Coolio & Tone Loc for the I Love The 90's Tour, Salt-N-Pepa (and Spinderella) give us the opportunity to relive the songs that dubbed them as the 'First Ladies of Rap'. PLAYLIST Council Estate of Mind SkinnyMan CTRL SZA Bleeds Roots Manuva Goddess Banks The hip hop & rnb on our playlist this month Building on the momentum she has been garnering this year, from her recently well-received singles 'Silence (Father Have Mercy)' & 'Juju', Davina Oriakhi is proud to release her debut album, Love To A Mortal. At the beginning of the year Caesar had four EPs and was just starting to make his name in the industry. GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS: DAVINA ORIAKHI Now, he's had two sold out shows in London, plus a performance at Canada Day in Trafalgar Square, dropped a 2-in-1 single, 'Blessed / We Find Love', released a video and announced his debut album, Freudian. In a note to THE FADER, Caesar wrote about the forthcoming LP, saying " I've never been as proud about anything I've created in my whole life. This body of work is about examining my most complex feelings and thoughts more directly. I'm more exposed than ever on this album. It's like I'm in therapy, but it's on display. And I got to make this with my friends. It's just us, no label, so it makes it that much more special." The 9-track offering opens up with 'It's All About Love' an assured piano ballad, while the organic jazz- influenced 'These Feelings' is backed by lush live horn instrumentation and chronicles the battle against the voice of reason and lust in Davina's head. It flows smoothly into some glorious spoken word with 'Temptation | Relapse' and 'Before The Silence', which serve as the perfect prelude to the album's lead single 'Silence (Father Have Mercy)'. From the soulful jazz-esque call to arms to "keep up the good fight" that is 'WST [Good Fight]', to the 'Moonshine' and the album's second single 'F.S.L.S' which both see Davina standing up for self-acceptance and self-love, to the closing track 'JuJu', Davina has created an eclectic, undeniable and assured body of work.
