54 ISSUE 102 / 2017 REGGAE TRACK OF THE MONTH: CHEZIDEK On September the 4th Bob Marley & The Wailers keyboard player Earl 'Wya' Lindo died in a hospital in London age 64. Reggae artist Chezidek is known for hit singles like 'Call Pon Dem', 'All My Life', 'Burn Di Ganja', 'Inna Di Road', and the list just goes on. Back with his latest singles 'Mama Bowl' & 'Ja Light' which are both summer hits rolling into 2018, we can't wait to see what else the legend has to offer. Born and raised in Saint Ann Parish Jamaica - the home of reggae music, it was destined for an artist like himself to break through the industry. According to reggae enthusiasts, Chezidek has the most unique and captivating voice in reggae and we can only hope he continues to bless us with more hits. Joining Marley and the Wailers in 1973 for their sixth studio album Burnin', Lindo was not initially credited but his image can be clearly seen in the original artwork of the LP. However, by 1974 the musician left the group and performed with blues artist Taj Mahal, and he later went on to record two solo hits, 'No Soul Today' & 'Who Done It'. After a successful music run on his own, Lindo rejoined the Wailers in 1978 where his talent shone through on tracks like 'Babylon By Bus', 'Survival' and 'Uprising.' He later did work on Bob Marley's record Natty Dread, right until his passing in 1981. In March of this year, Lindo was still performing live in the Wailers UK tour with Aston Barett & Junior Marvin. The Wailers expressed their grief in a written statement, "There is only one Earl "Wya" Lindo, and today he went home to join Bob, Peter, & Carly for a mystical jam session in Zion...this teenage musical genius, producer & visionary was the first invited to join Bob, Peter & Bunny when his reputation & talent reached Bob's ears." NEWS: BOB MARLEY'S KEYBOARDIST EARL 'WYA' LINDO PASSES AWAY ALBUM OF THE MONTH: MAD PROFESSOR & JAH9 Jah9 and Mad Professor team up for a dubwise version of Jah9's 2016 LP 9. From the arrangement, bass and tones of Mad Professor Meets Jah9 – In the Midst of the Storm, the album stays true to Jah9's heartfelt poetic style of sound. However, this time it is given the Mad Professor's trademark "dub-me- crazy treatment." From tracks like 'Spiritual Woman Dub' and 'Lioness Order Dub' which give off a dreamy quality in there arrangement. It is obvious the Mad Professor has utilised his studio wizardry to create mesmerizing dub remixes. The following tracks 'Strumming Dub' and 'Dub Prevail' showcase a far more mellow vibe, seeping with trance inducing dub that is heavily influenced by deep roots reggae. While 'Fountain Dub' & 'I Aware Dub' allow Jah9's spiritual songwriting to blend seamlessly in the foreground, as the Professor's instrumental beats heighten the rhythm of the tracks, done in true Ariwa style. Creating a truly sonically diverse record through and through.
