Editor's Note Susie Zanardi | Editor, TravelWeekly Asia susie.zanardi@tenalpsasia.com Asian Hotel Chains Hotels in many countries undego name changes….. one day, it could be Sheraton, and it becomes an Angsana. The Royal Crown Plaza became the Royal Plaza on Scotts and the Le Meridien became a Concorde. All in all, the average traveller has little idea of what all the name changes mean. Behind the scenes are changes of ownership and management. Many hotels that bear the hallmark of international chains like Starwood (which offers many brands like Sheraton, Le Meridien and Westin), InterContinental or Accor are mainly management or franchise companies – which enables individual hotel property or small chain owners to enjoy their branding, goodwill and distribution system. They do not own most of their properties, but have done well managing or franchising their brands. Thailand's Thanpuying Chanut and Malaysia's Robert Kuok had the vision and foresight to set up chains like Dusit International and Shangri-La Hotels & Resorts to take on the big international chains, and perhaps beat them at their game. So has Banyan Tree's Ho Kwon Ping. Well travelled, and with impeccable taste, they have set very high standards for others to follow. In our fi rst part of Asian hotel chains, we feature Dusit International, Pan Pacifi c Hotel Group and Banyan Tree. Created by artist-designer Pascal Anson from Brighton, the special livery is to commemorate the coming Olympics Game in London. It uses the cockpit for its beak, fuselage and wings for its main body and wings, and the tailfi n as its tail. The aircrafts are to be painted white with gold strokes of paint to represent the feathers. The Dove, a symbol of peace and social unity, were used at the London 2 | ■ TRAVELWEEKLY ASIA | 10 APRIL 2012 Games in 1948. Anton's design was chosen among the many that submitted entries for the BA's Great Britons programme launched last year. It was to search for rising British stars in food, film and art and provide them with a global platform to showcase their work. The search for the Great Britons has been documented and will be shown on BA fl ights over the summer.
