Affected airlines – Berjaya Air, Cebu Pacific, Firefl y, South East Asian Airlines and Tiger Airways – will move their operations to Terminal 2 and will start operations there from September 25 at 6am. In a statement, Changi Airport Group said construction of Terminal 4 will begin in 2013 and is expected to be ready by 2017. It would be capable of handling 16 million passengers per annum and would be designed for quick turnaround of aircraft, and effi cient processing of passengers, without any aerobridges. It added: "CAG has had discussions with the airlines operating at the Budget Terminal since late last year regarding the terminal's closure. It will work with the respective airlines to ensure a smooth transition of their operations, and will endeavour to minimise inconvenience to passengers as far as possible. More details on each airline's operations at Terminal 2 will be provided nearer the effective date." Terminal 4 is "to cater to the continued growth of air traffi c at Changi Airport and further strengthen Singapore's air hub status". It will offer a wide choice of retail, food and beverage outlets, and better amenities to serve the needs of travellers. CAG's fi gures indicated that passenger traffi c has increased at a compounded annual growth rate of 5.2 per cent. over the past decade. In 2011, Changi handled a total of 46.5 million passenger movements, a year-on-year increase of 10.7 per cent. Currently Changi Airport has a capacity of more than 70 million passengers per annum. In 2011, the Budget Terminal handled more than 4.6 million passenger movements and prepar- ations are being made to handle further increase in traffi c demand. "Singapore-based carriers – Singapore Airlines, SilkAir, Tiger Airways, Jetstar Asia and Scoot – have ordered new aircraft and foreign carriers have also expressed the desire to grow their air links with Singapore. The new terminal will enable CAG to sustain the long-term growth of Changi Airport," CAG added. The Budget Terminal was built in March 2006 in response to the emerging trend of low cost carriers (LCCs) in Asia. The 28,200 sq. m terminal – equivalent to the size of three football fi elds – is a single-storey with no travellators, escalators and aerobridges. Page 8
