Salute to Singapore Agents
HAVING been in the travel trade since the 70's, I have had the pleasure of meeting a few travel agents in Singapore that are still in the trade. I have met them occasionally over the years when I attend Skal club lunches, and I am amazed that they still carry on – despite their ages – and how so. They are the first – generation travel agents – whom I fondly refer to as the Old Brigade, but how fast they work and the speed with which they work to deliver the answers I needed for this interview, really amazed me. To Prem Ohri (MD of GC Nanda & Sons), Peter Choo (MD of Global Travel/Scenic Travel) and Tan Chee Chye (chairman of World Express), we
salute you and hope that featuring you in our E-book – you have a record for your contributions to the travel scene in Singapore. Meanwhile, brace yourself for a slow down in market as well. SIA's third-quarter performance report and its forecast for the present quarter appears to be a warning of what is to come. SIA has cut its frequencies on routes like Istanbul, Dubai and Taipei, but has also added fl ights to its growth areas like Osaka, Beijing, and Shanghai. Air Asia has pulled out of India and Europe. But, the NATAS fair will continue to attract and prove that travel indeed does not slow down – if prices are right. At least in Asia.

EU's Carbon tax: China's new directive
What would it come to now that China has banned its airlines from complying with EU's scheme to impose taxes on airlines flying into Europe? The scheme which came into effect on Jan 1 – and which is strongly opposed by many countries including United States, Russia and India – has been introduced and the status is that the aviation industry is awaiting to hear that it can be resolved, hopefully through negotiations.
A statement from China's official State Council or Cabinet said that airlines were barred from using the ETS scheme to raise passenger fares or other charges. China fears that its airlines – including Air China, China Eastern and China Southern – will have to pay an additional 800 million yuan (US$127 million) a year on fl ights originating or landing in Europe, and that by 2020, would cost four times as much.
India plans to retaliate. "If they don't call it off, we will retaliate," Prashant Sukul, joint secretary of India's Ministry of Civil Aviation told Aviation Week at the World Route Development Forum in Berlin last October. If India carries out its threat, then fl ights by European airlines to India could be curtailed. People (in other countries) have ideas about retaliatory measures, and they will act their way, Sukul said. "If Russia doubles the overflight charges, European airlines will be out of business," he said "They could no longer fl y east of Europe."
A group of 26 countries also issued a joint statement in New Delhi few months ago demanding that the European Commission cancel the ETS. It included US, China, Russia, India, Brazil, Nigeria, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. It said that the EU emissions scheme was "inconsistent with applicable international law".
