Moving Ahead
Life has come full circle for me – now as the newly appointed Editor of TravelWeekly Asia and Events Asia. It began for me in the 70s when I worked with the Straits Times covering the tourism beat. I
rejoined t he indust r y in
Hong Kong in the 80s when I took up position as Asst Editor/Travel Information Editor at Business Traveller Asia Pacif ic, and subsequently Senior Correspondent for Travel News Asia (now defunct).I resurfaced again in Singapore in 1996 for a year working as Senior Correspondent for TTG Asia. It is remarkable to think that over
the years what has actually become cheaper are airfares and communi- cations costs. Every-thing else, it appears has gone up in price.
As Editor, I hope to be introducing
new pages that will encourage our readers to be pro-active. There must be many who would want to express themselves – either telling us of their experiences of operating in the travel business – their difficulties and their joys. Or simply giving their opinions. There also must be those who want to share their photographs or their impressions of places they visit, or of funny signs that they have come across. And do send us your appointments…. People moving upwards, or to different positions outside and within. We welcome your suggestions and
comments about the magazine at the industry. So has technology as made it so simple to communicate, kindly send them in.
Editor's Pick
A new US Transportation Department rule, which comes into effect on January 26, will require that all advertised airfares include all taxes and non-optional fees. Even fuel charges and September 11 security fee are to be included. So, for Americans, starting soon, there will be no more asterisks. "The price advertising provision
was adopted to make sure passengers know the full amount they will have to pay for air transportation when they buy a ticket," agency spokesman Bill Mosley said.
Travellers in Asia and worldwide
are familiar with these ads which airlines – both scheduled and budget – have been adopting. Even tour packages have adopted this practice which infuriates and confuses the traveller. There are the airport surcharges,
fuel surcharges, credit/debit card booking surcharges, and for budget airlines, even check-in luggage and seating preferences cost extra. I f
the pract ice is implemented
No more asterisks worldwide,

easy and transparent for the consumer, and el iminate all the il l - feel ings a passenger has when he makes a booking. Singapore travel agency Dynamikz
Travel has been under attack recently by customers who booked its $199 (US$155) a head four-day trip to Bangkok through group buying websites, which turned out unfortunately to be what was not promised. The deal seemed too good to be
true, and those who booked were asked to pay a heap of additional charges and hidden costs, including airpor t taxes, peak period surcharge, S$50 administrative fee for change of travel dates and another S$48 in peak period surcharge. To be fair, this practice has been
going on for years, such that what you see advertised on internet or on the papers, is a far off from what the traveller actually ends up paying. So, hopefully, we will see NETT prices advertised in Asia/ Pacifi c as well.
