Not a timid rabbit
WE'RE just into the New Year and already disasters have struck, from the fl oods in Queensland and Victoria to the earthquake in Christchurch. Then there are the uprisings in Egypt, Bahrain and Libya, all that do not augur well for the world economy. Oil prices are expected to rise as the Middle East faces political uncertainties with the fear of spill-over effects from the countries revolting. Food prices are rocketing sky high as the bad weather damages crops worldwide, it looks like the Year of the Rabbit is rocking things worldwide. What does this spell for travel? Well…it's too early to say but last year's results were astounding. There was double-digit growth for
Asia and the Pacifi c according to PATA. The year of the Tiger brought robust results and we're hoping for a gentle one with the Rabbit but it doesn't look too timid this year. Yet predictions are that travel will flourish buoyed by healthy economies in Asia, intra- regional travel will prevail. Already airlines and hotels have raised rates but are still seeing good demand, this has not hampered travel at all. Travel is still happening and we do welcome airlines like AirAsia that is giving more people the opportunity to travel with their one million seats sold at super low prices known as Project Fly. Dato Tony Fernandes certainly has ideas that take fl ight.
