28 HOUSE / TECHNO www.guestlist.net Machinedrum @ Lightbox 23rd November APPARAT ARTIST OF THE MONTH Issue 44 / 2012 Electronic artist Travis Stewart will be mixing old school house breaks with modern sounds on 23rd November at The Lightbox, London. The American electronic producer behind Machinedrum, also known as Syndrone, Tstewart, and Neon Black, is also is one half of Sepalcure, with Praveen Sharma, and currently resides in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin. Born in 1982, he was exposed to music from a really young age. His grandfather gave him his first guitar at the age of 6, and his singer/songwriter cousin infected him with a passion for creativity. Then at high school, he started playing with rhythms through a djembe in an African ensemble. It wasn't until 8th grade that he turned into electronic music. He then started the Machinedrum project and released his first record, Now You Know, on Merck Records at the age of 19. Since then, he has collaborated with Tiombe Lockhart,Theophilus London Jesse Boykins III, Azealia Banks, and Mickey Factz among others. But it was partnering with Praveen Sharma, and becoming Sepalcure, that helped him buid a name. Together they signed with Hotflush records and wrote and performed the song 'Outside The Lines' for Black Swan. Machinedrum has played such venues as the Sydney Opera House, the Nokia Theater in New York City, the Sonar Music Festival '11 and '12 in Barcelona, and SXSW. Germany has always been at the forefront of electronic music. From early pioneers like Kraftwerk to contemporary artists, every fresh release shows a nation's scene at the top of its game. This is the case of Apparat, Sascha Ring being his real name, a Berlin artist ubiquitous for a decade. He has released four albums, with the most recent being 2011's The Devil's Walk. He has performed for thousands of spectators in clubs and festivals worldwide. Sascha gives rise to rich emotions and textures in his music. Something between Radiohead, Archive, Steve Reich and M83, Apparat sparks off a kind of euphoric melancholy. In a dark and mystical atmosphere, it is difficult to define the musical style of Apparat. Over his four albums, Sascha Ring has explored techno, pop, trip hop, rock reminiscent of Pink Floyd, and many other styles dictated by his extensive collaborations. What makes the genius of Apparat OCTOBER RELEASES LUNATIC FRINGE EP Lee Curtiss (VISIONQUEST) LOVE & WAR Wolfgang Gartner (ULTRA) GOOD TIMES Michael Mayer, Jeppe Kjellberg (KOMPAKT) THESE TIMES Jimpster, Simon Jinadu (FREERANGE RECORDS) CITYFOX CIRCLE 1 Various Artists (CITYFOX) FOLLOW ME John Monkman, Liz Cass (GET PHYSICAL MUSIC) is that he is not afraid to explore and to mix it up, which makes his musical universe so avantgard. Apparat made his first foray into music as a techno DJ in Berlin clubs during the 1990s. He used his growing reputation to create a label intended to help make a name for young artists. He released his first album Multifunktionsebene in 2001. In 2002 he released Trial and Error and Duplex in 2003. He co-produced Ellen Allien's second album Berlinette that became a point of reference in the electro scene. In 2005 he released Silizium, which has been categorised as 'crossover pop', which included vocal tracks and instruments at acoustic sonorities accompanied by a melancholic tone.
