Issue 44 / 2012 EVENT PREVIEW AWARENESS AND LOVE ALLNIGHTER @ BRIXTON JAM. 27TH OCTOBER DRUM N BASS / DUBSTEP 39 www.guestlist.net ARTIST OF THE MONTH WILKINSON 7 It's the illegitimate son of dubstep and DnB. then If you've not heard of drumstep before neither has anyone else. Next time a track comes on in the club that sounds like a 56k dial- up modem at 140bpm, then you're probably listening to drumstep. Just pretend you've been into it since jungle was big. The latest craze to hit the clubs has been pioneered by artists such as Heist and BBC Radio 1Xtra's Crissy Criss. It can be distinguished from dubstep for it's faster tempo, half time beats, and heavy use of hi- hat patterns. It is also more aggressive don't worry, dubstep. Imagine two broken than traditional washing machines having a fight in space. It's a bit like that. If you've not rushed off to clean the dirt from your ears with a bit of Beiber, then you'll want to check out The Awareness and Love All Nighter at The Brixton Jamm on the 27th October. On the bill are Evil Nine, DJ Moneyshot, Kanji Kinetic and Beat3. This is a special Halloween themed night, so come dressed as Skrillex (dye your hair black and shave one side of your head), on second thoughts, don't do that, you'll definitely get the dubstep kicked out of you. From South West London strides Wilkinson, Ram Record's newest hot ticket. Drum & bass and electronica artist Wilkinson got involved with music from an early age, although he tried many different styles until finding his element. From rock-drummer at the age of 9, to teenage hip-hop and dance music artist, and finally reaching what takes him to our paper today, drum & bass. His brother introduced him to this genre when he gave him a D&B mix CD. As with most important things in life, it came by chance. He was rehearsing at his college studio, he bought his first bits of production gear and turned his bedroom into a studio until he could afford to have a proper one not far from his place. Influenced by tunes such as Matrix, TC's early stuff, Roni Size, Ed Rush & Optical, High Contrast, Logistics and some of the old Pendulum, he describes his style as "me trying to find that middle ground between dance floor mayhem and nice uplifting music". His goal is to get as much volume and bass into a tune as he can. He first worked for Hospital Records doing his first release in the Sick Music 2 compilation, but soon he sent some tunes to Ram Records who welcomed him with open arms via Andy C. He went away from Hospital because he discovered he was more into real dancefloor drum & bass than real musical drum & bass. So he decided "to go down a more dancefloor route, with bigger basslines and a bit more of a harsher sound". Ram then distributed his first singles in clubs all over the world, getting a good response from audiences, so they decided to include all of them on Andy C's Nightlife 5. That was what catapulted him to success: damage dance-floors worldwide and win fans from Skream, Fabio and High Contrast. Lately he has remixed Chase & Status, Ti me Takers, She Blows and Example's new single Midnight Run and is currently working on production projects for new Mercury Records signing Jay'Elle'Dee and Island Records artist Jess Mills. He is also preparing his debut album for Ram Records and still touring worldwide from Australia to Berlin, Brighton and Barcelona.
