tween for the Boilermakers. In the last 45 years, Purdue has left Columbus victorious just twice, a 41-6 win in 1967 and a 31-26 triumph in 1988. Purdue has lost eight in a row at Ohio State, and only two of those games were close in the fourth quarter (1999 and 2003). Yet, blowout losses like what an injury-riddled Purdue team suffered in its last visit in 2010 haven't necessarily been the norm either. OSU won 48-14 in 1994, 28-0 in 1995 and 35-9 in 2001, but the latter two games got out of hand late in the fourth quarter. Purdue's 1988 win remains an amazing story. Not only Successful trips to Columbus have been few and far be- were the Boilermakers led to victory by a 17-year-old quarter- back in Brian Fox (see photo on page 9), but a seldom-used Canadian fullback named Ernie Schramayr was a weapon the Buckeyes couldn't seem to slow. The stocky Schramayr caught 13 passes for 106 yards with nearly all coming on five-yard tosses over the middle that Coach John Cooper's defense couldn't defend. Fox was named Big Ten Player-of- the-Week thanks to connecting on 17-of-27 passes for 233 yards and leading the Boilermakers back from a 17-7 third quarter deficit. The victory was THE highlight of the non-de- script Fred Akers Era at Purdue. In 1967, the game was a blowout — in Purdue's favor. FIVE POINTS TO PONDER 1 2 Jack Mollenkopf called off the dogs and coasted to a 41-6 win over Woody Hayes' team. Hayes, however, had a chance to call off the dogs two years later in a lopsided OSU win, but chose not to, a fact that has never set well with long-time Boilermaker fans. Young Boilermaker quarterbacks having success at Ohio State is a common thread for Purdue's limited success in Central Ohio. In 1945, an 18-year old freshman named Bob DeMoss shocked the col- lege football world by leading Purdue to a 35-13 win over the No. 4-ranked Buckeyes. — Alan Karpick Like in '88, a young quarterback led the way as sophomore Mike Phipps (freshmen were not eligible then) helped the Boilermakers build a 35-0 lead in the first half before Coach 3 4 5 games?
