Masta Killa is probably not one of the first names that comes to mind when you mention the Wu Tang Clan. Unlike Ghostface Killah and Raekwon, Masta Killa has rarely been one to bask in the limelight, instead work- ing more in the background, steadily releasing music. Having not dropped an LP since 2012's Selling My Soul, his new album Loyalty is Royalty features numerous up and coming Wu affiliates. As well as many of the original clan mem- bers, not to mention the recently deceased and greatly missed Sean Price and prodigy of Mobb Deep. The album itself is the perfect vehicle for Masta Killa to further maintain and exhibit his murderously smooth style, with 9th Wonder, Dame Grease, and PF Cuttin handling the production. Whether it's the loved-up soulful vibes of 'Flex With Me', the downright hard New York style of 'Real People' or the unadulterated Masta Killa feel of 'Noodles, Pt.1', the beats all have the hallmarks of that time honoured signature Wu-Tang sound. This record is suitable for heavy rotation on any hip-hop heads playlist and, if you're a fan of the Wu, it is another album to obsess over. Cardi B's debut smash hit 'Bodark Yellow' has seen her reaching the highest spot possible on Hot 100. GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS: ROCKS FOE The artist is now joining the ranks of Lauryn Hill, Lil Kim, Shawnna & Iggy Azaela. However, only Lauryn Hill & Cardi B have been able to climb to the top as solo artists. Lil Kim hit number one with the song 'Lady Marmalade' alongside Pink, Mya and Christina Aguilera. While Shawnna won with the single 'Stand Up' featuring Ludacris and Iggy Azelia saw 'Fancy' propel her all the way to the top with Charli XCX. Now a member of one of five female rappers that has climbed all the way to the top of the charts, the sky is the limit for Cardi. To hear 'Bodark Yellow' live be sure to catch Cardi at the Alexandra Palace on the 30th of November. Written over the course of that period and entirely self-produced, Fight The Good? Fight digs deeper than ever before into Rocks' psyche, drawing on both religious elements and his own life experiences for much of its lyrical inspiration. Musically, Fight The Good? Fight also broadens his own horizons, with Rocks widening his scope to take in sounds from beyond the sprawling urban landscape of his home town of Croydon. On the two tracks that bookend the record, 'Nitty Gritty' and 'Into My Own Hands', he flows at trademark lightning speed over crunchy rap beats, but it's on cuts like 'Downpour' and the wandering spoken-word of 'Red Hand Of Ulster' that he unmasks a new, more vulnerable guise. Comfortable spitting acapella, off-beat or even in spoken word — over straight-up rap beats or woozy Commodo instrumentals — Rocks has long been considered one of the UK's most compelling young lyricists, but on Fight The Good? Fight, Rocks comes of age proper. NEWS: CARDI B BECOMES FIRST FEMALE RAPPER SINCE LAURYN HILL TO TOP US CHARTS HIP HOP LEGENDS: MASTA KILLA 34 ISSUE 103 / 2017 HIP HOP & RNB
