32 / NOVEMBER.DECEMBER.2017 USICERINKS.COM PHOTOS: KENDALL ICE ARENA to provide ice to those who did not have power. "Our public (skating) sessions were very popular the next weekend. Families with- out power were grateful for a chance to cool off," Kent said. The Power of Community Ultimately, the rink is now back to full capability and hosting skaters through- out the day. For the Johnsons, this is the fourth hurricane they've been through while in Florida. But this one has been the biggest in their time in Miami. Looking back on the situation, Jane says she believes she made the right call by staying at Kendall. "I wanted to find a safe place and stay where I'm at," she said. "I thought it would be better for me to be (at Kendall) rather than trying to drive away. I wanted to make sure we still had a business after the storm." For all those involved, this has been an experience filled with memories and laughs. "You should've seen all 10 dogs running around the rink. It was hilarious," Silva- Falcon recalled. "After the power came back, we all cheered as if we had won the lottery." Though there is plenty of work still to be done in the area, and it has caused significant issues, for those who stayed at Kendall, this was a solid reminder of the power of your local ice rink. "Since I first started skating, I knew the rink would always be my shelter," Silva- Falcon said. "I couldn't be happier to be a skater and to be part of such an amaz- ing community. I saw how the rink had become my shelter in a way I thought it would never be. "Overall, I learned a big lesson. The rink is a skater's safe haven in a million different ways."
