HIGH FLYING ACTION The SCORE Baja 1000 Qualifying Presented By BFGoodrich Tires By Dan Sanchez Photos by Get Some Photo The start of the 50th Annual BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 began October 31st, during the SEMA Show in Las Vegas Nevada, when 35 SCORE Trophy Trucks left the SCORE Baja 1000 Experience at 3:30 pm, and drove down Las Vegas Boulevard to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the SCORE Baja 1000 Qualifying presented by BFGoodrich Tires. The event allowed the SCORE Trophy Truck and Trophy Truck Legends classes to battle it out on a .6-mile off-road track for three laps that total 1.8-miles. SEMA Show attendees were admitted into the qualifying rounds, but free tickets were also made available at the 4Wheel Parts store in Las Vegas with limited availability. Nevertheless, the crowd was at capacity for the LVMS. The crowds cheered all evening, as the Trophy Trucks went all-out to get the best starting positions for the 50th Annual BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000. In the end, Robby Gordon achieved the fastest qualifying time of two minutes, 52.26 seconds with an average speed of 37.46 miles per hour with the number 77 Team Gordon Chevy Silverado. According to race officials, the 5,000-pound race trucks are designed for the pounding of open desert racing, resulting in average speeds in qualifying 15-20 miles per hour less than they would average during the actual races. Although the speeds may have been slower, the excitement was definitely at an all-time high, as Gordon and the other racers, took flight over the man-made jumps and as spectators waited to hear the final results. Gordon was closely followed by Rob MacCachren, who finished the three-lap course in 2:52.73 in the number 11 Rockstar MacCachren Motorsports Ford F-150. Gordon finished .47 seconds faster than MacCachren, indicating how close the qualifying competition was that night. This is the second time Gordon has taken the first starting position in the four years that this qualifying event has taken place for the SCORE Baja 1000. Finishing in third was SCORE rookie Brandon Arthur, of San Diego, who subbed for the driver of record Andy McMillin. Arthur finished with a time of 2:54.38 in the number 31 TSCO Racing Ford F-150, followed by Ricky Johnson who was the Driver Of Record for Larry Connor of Miamisburg, Ohio. Johnson finished with a time of 2:54.60 in the number 6 Team C Racing Chevy Silverado. Finishing fifth was Las Vegas’ Bryce Menzies with a time of 2:55.89 in the number 7 Menzies Motorsports Red Bull Ford Raptor. For those that missed the action, the SCORE Baja 1000 Qualifying presented by BFGoodrich Tires will be televised on a delayed basis on a date to-be-announced as a one-hour special on the El Rey Network with later syndication internationally. THE FIRST IN LINE Robby Gordon Wins the Ultimate Dana/Spicer Top Qualifier Award The fastest qualifier at the SCORE Baja 1000 Qualifying presented by BFGoodrich Tires, not only gets to start off first at the 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000, but the fastest qualifier also receives the Ultimate Dana/Spicer Top Qualifier Award. Dana/Spicer is an OE and aftermarket supplier of racing and high-performance drivetrain axles that many racing teams use in their vehicles. This year, Robby Gordon earned the first starting position in the SCORE Trophy Truck division during qualifying October 31st at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and earned the Ultimate Dana/Spicer Top Qualifier Award in the process. Gordon will be driving the number 77 Chevy Silverado Trophy Truck at the 50th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000, which will give him the advantage of setting the pace and getting clear air as he tries to finish first across a grueling 1,134.40 miles across the Baja peninsula. The race starts in Ensenada and ends in La Paz and because it is the 50th anniversary, there will be more competitors on the course (over 400 entries), giving Gordon an advantage in this race. Watch as Robby Gordon makes a fast pass during the SCORE Baja 1000 Qualifying presented by BFGoodrich tires.
