TRACK OF THE MONTH: MIZO - EXIST In a huge display of unity, d&b labels across the board have come together and present Spotify an incredible playlist, I Luv Drum & Bass. Eatbrain continue 2017 with more dance floor pressure. Like some kind of neurofunk factory, Eatbrain has been churning out the tunes this year. If they weren't the leading neurofunk label already, they certainly are now. They landed hard again at the tail-end of November with another beefy EP. Stepping up this time was the twisted Russian heavyweight, Mizo. Slamming five intense slabs of that sick Eastern European flavour. All the tracks are sick, though our highlight has gotta be 'Exist'. Cold, sinister openings are a real trait of neurofunk tunes, and Mizo pulls off a real ominous one before flipping down a gritty bassline and one of those mad snare hits we've all come to love. It'll be continually updated by hundreds of artists and labels, creating a definitive view of drum & bass and representing the genre's diversity. This vision was sparked earlier in October. A message board originally celebrating Grooverider's birthday grew into deep conversation. It involved Fresh suggesting d&b should adapt and embrace streaming platforms before Bassline Smith proposed a definitive playlist of drum & bass. The idea was born, and wheels set in motion to make it happen. Label heads from across the entire spectrum of the scene, lead by Fresh, Bassline Smith, Micky Finn, Grooverider, Futurebound and DJ SS worked together to bring this to life. Self-organised by the scene itself, it bears no commercial interest to anyone - only to provide drum & bass fans a space to explore all corners of the genre without needing to dig. Hundreds of artists and labels have committed to this concept, where the latest music is added daily. Contributors include the institutions of the scene alongside the fresher and more niche imprints. Bringing a new unity and energy to the scene, the I Luv Drum & Bass playlist represents the evolving attitude that has defined the genre since day one. NEWS: D&B SCENE JOINS FORCES FOR NEW STREAMING VISION ARTIST OF THE MONTH: BENNY L A driving force in drum & bass right now. From the moment Shimon first introduced him to the scene in 2015, Benny L has been making all the right noises. The producer has unleashed a mighty fine collection of records over the past two years which has had ravers and peers going mad. It's hard to believe how new and young this producer is, given the standard of tracks that are coming from his studio right now. He masterfully crafts club tracks and doesn't settle for the loudest bass to tear up the subs. Benny prefers to drag his basstones out, rattling any systems that his cuts get played on, giving his tracks great depth. His hard work has all built up to his latest release, the Route Zero EP on Metalheadz. The current peak of Benny L's work, his harshest yet and exactly why he's hot topic in drum & bass right now. 40 ISSUE 104 / 2017 DRUM & BASS PLAYLIST The drum and bass on our playlist this month Primal Fire Bad Company Nevermind It Ed:it Gollum Shimon & Trimer Roots Survival
