50 ISSUE 104 / 2017 INDIE Fats Domino was a leading force in the birth of rock n roll in the 1950's. It is commonly said that he was one of the first African American rock n roll artists to become popular with both black and white fans. His unique style was a fusion of rhythm and blues complimented with piano, saxophones, electric guitar, bass and drums. Domino sold over 65 million records throughout his career, which was more than any other 1950's artist in the genre apart from Elvis Presley. Born in New Orleans, he began playing the piano aged 10 and performing in bars aged 14. Producer Dave Bartholomew discovered Domino and he was signed by Imperial Records in 1949. His first single that year was 'The Fat Man', which is widely considered as the first ever rock n roll song. It is suggested that Domino paved the way for future star Elvis Presley, who later confessed that Domino and Bartholomew were making rock n roll music before the term was even coined. The rock n roll artist passed away on October 24th from natural causes. Although he was overlooked for most of his career his legacy still lives on. NEWS: AN OVERLOOKED PIONEER: FATS DOMINO DIES AGED 89 ALBUM OF THE MONTH: A HOUSE IN THE TREES South London collective, A House In The Trees emerged from The Rising Sun in New Cross to gracing stages all over London. Once a bedroom project, the group is now newly signed to Handsome Dad Records, which has assembled their redolent vocals, hazy instruments, trip-hop beats and aesthetically pleasing visuals into their latest EP What Am I Supposed to Do? The first single to be dropped on What Am I Supposed to Do? is an alt-pop sensation. 'Summertime' offers up a hypnotic sound that will leave you reminiscing about the summer. The bands next song 'Amazing Gray' defines "finding happiness when there is no positive stimulus to prop you up". Sam Hatchwell, the creator of AHITT sings freely to illustrate the spellbinding emotions of the song. Each track on the record seeps with stunning vocals, backed by laid-back grooves that make A House In The Trees, one to watch in the coming year. TRACK OF THE MONTH: SOULITAIRE Soulitaire's latest single 'New Breed' is chock-full of harmony and jazz. Taking his cues from late 60s Beatles, 70s Joni Mitchell and the Pat Metheny Group, Soulitaire manages to pull on your heart strings with 'New Breed'. Using a sliding guitar technique, releasing a softness in the strumming and a natural loop of hand beats- bass. His sound breathes off a well-balanced weight between the classic and the contemporary, evoking a charm in the relationship between the vocals and harmony, as can be heard on 'New Breed'. Speaking on the inspiration behind the track he said: "The song is about hope. A look through all the anxiety and desperation right into a time when those deliberate and warm hearted people that are young adults today will become the next architects of our world..."
